  • Acute and chronic respiratory diseases
View approved original text

This medication helps to soften mucus and facilitate its expulsion in acute and chronic respiratory diseases. By promoting the smooth removal of mucus from the airways, it eases breathing. It is particularly effective in alleviating symptoms when experiencing severe coughing or excessive phlegm. It assists patients in reducing discomfort caused by respiratory diseases and enables more comfortable breathing. This medication works as an expectorant by thinning respiratory mucus to improve symptoms.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults: Administer (take) 300 mg of erdosteine orally 2~3 times daily. When administered for acute respiratory disease, do not administer continuously for more than 10 days.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. Individuals allergic to this medication or its ingredients should not take it. Patients with liver cirrhosis or cystathionine synthase deficiency should avoid this medication as its metabolites can affect methionine metabolism. Patients with peptic ulcers should also avoid this medication. Patients with severe renal impairment, especially those with a creatinine clearance of less than 25 mL/min, should not use this medication. Patients with severe liver impairment should also refrain from taking this medication. Additionally, this medication contains lactose; individuals genetically predisposed to galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take this medication. Patients with mild to moderate liver impairment should use this medication cautiously and should not exceed a dose of 300 mg per day. Patients with diabetes or on a low-calorie diet should be particularly cautious when using syrup formulations. Excessive intake of this medication can lead to symptoms such as sweating, dizziness, and flushing of the face. Neurological and respiratory symptoms have been reported, including headaches, cold symptoms, and shortness of breath. Gastrointestinal side effects can include altered taste, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and heartburn. Dermatological reactions may include hives, red spots, and eczema. Various adverse reactions such as fatigue, dyspepsia, palpitations, facial and general swelling, itching, weakness, drowsiness, and rash have been reported, although a direct correlation with this medication is not established. Taking this medication alongside expectorants may increase the risk of bronchial infections due to difficulty in expelling mucus with the relief of cough. Additionally, this could affect bronchial constriction and dilation, potentially causing bronchospasm, so caution is warranted when combining these medications. Pregnant or potentially pregnant women, as well as nursing mothers, are advised not to take this medication as its safety has not been established. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and precautions should be taken to avoid transferring it to other containers which may lead to accidents or affect the quality of the medication.
