This medication is used to prevent asthma attacks and for prolonged treatment. It is also effective in relieving the symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. Therefore, it helps patients with asthma and allergic rhinitis in symptom relief and management.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults and adolescents aged 15 years and older: Montelukast, 10 mg once daily to be taken orally. This medication should be taken 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. For patients with both asthma and allergic rhinitis, it is recommended to take 1 tablet, 1 packet, or 1 piece once in the evening.

Child dose

Children aged 6 to 14: Montelukast, 5 mg once daily, to be chewed or placed on the tongue and allowed to dissolve without water. Children aged 4 to 5: Montelukast, 4 mg once daily.

Precautions

This medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame and should not be administered to patients with phenylketonuria, a hereditary condition. Aspartame is broken down into phenylalanine in the body, so individuals who must restrict their phenylalanine intake should not take this medication. Additionally, this medication contains lactose and should not be administered to patients with lactose intolerance or related genetic issues. This medication is not intended for use during acute asthma attacks, so appropriate emergency medications should be prepared in case of sudden worsening of asthma. During treatment, inhaled corticosteroid preparations should not be suddenly discontinued or changed, but should be gradually adjusted in accordance with the physician's instructions. It is advisable not to use aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs simultaneously while taking this medication. Rarely, symptoms of vasculitis such as eosinophilia may appear; should such symptoms occur, contact a physician. Neuropsychiatric symptoms may arise during treatment, such as anxiety, depression, hallucinations, etc.; report any such changes to healthcare personnel immediately. This medication can be used by a variety of age groups from children to the elderly, but safety and effectiveness have not been established in infants under 6 months of age. There are no specific antidotes for overdose, so general treatment should be administered according to symptoms, following a physician's instructions. This medication is sensitive to light, so it should only be opened immediately before use, and should be stored out of reach of children.
