Treatment of obesity (weight loss and maintenance), reduction and prevention of the risk of weight regain
This medication is used for obese patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or higher, or for obese patients with a BMI of 27 kg/m² or higher who have risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or dyslipidemia. It helps to reduce or maintain weight in conjunction with a low-calorie diet. Additionally, it has the effect of reducing the risk of weight regain. This contributes to the prevention and improvement of health issues related to obesity. Overall, it is effectively used for obesity treatment and weight management.
○ Adults The recommended dose of this medicine is orlistat 120 mg per dose orally 3 times daily with a fat-containing meal or within 1 hour after a meal. Patients should continue a nutritionally balanced, mildly hypocaloric diet in which approximately 30 % of calories are derived from fat. Daily intake of fat, carbohydrates, and protein should be distributed evenly among three meals. This medicine may be omitted if a meal is missed or contains no fat. Since this medicine may reduce the absorption of some fat-soluble vitamins and beta-carotene, patients are advised to take a multivitamin containing fat-soluble vitamins to ensure adequate nutrient intake. The vitamin supplement should be taken at least 2 hours before this medicine or at least 2 hours after it, such as at bedtime. Taking more than orlistat 120 mg per dose 3 times daily does not increase efficacy. According to measurements of fecal fat, the effect of this medicine appears 24 ∼ 48 hours after taking the medicine. After treatment is discontinued, fecal fat content generally returns to pretreatment levels within 48 ∼ 72 hours. The efficacy and safety of this medicine for periods exceeding 4 years have not been evaluated. ○ Studies have not been conducted in patients with hepatic and/or renal impairment, children under 12 years of age, or elderly patients.
This medication should not be used by patients with chronic malabsorption syndrome or cholestasis. Additionally, individuals who have an allergic reaction to this medication or its components should not take it. Pregnant women, women who may become pregnant, and nursing mothers should not take this medication. For patients with impaired liver function, this medication should be used cautiously, and if symptoms of liver dysfunction occur, they should immediately inform a doctor and discontinue use. Monitoring liver function through liver enzyme tests is important. Patients with hyperoxaluria or calcium oxalate kidney stones should also take this medication with caution. When taking this medication, gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal distention, flatulence, constipation, or diarrhea may often occur. These symptoms are mostly mild and transient, commonly appearing within three months of starting treatment. However, in some patients, gastrointestinal adverse reactions may persist for more than six months. There may be cases where the medication is discontinued due to adverse reactions, primarily gastrointestinal symptoms. Taking this medication with high-fat meals may increase the risk of gastrointestinal adverse reactions; therefore, it's advisable to distribute fat intake evenly across three meals a day. Furthermore, this medication can reduce the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E, K) and beta-carotene, so patients taking this medication are recommended to take vitamin supplements. Vitamin supplements should be taken at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking this medication. Rare side effects related to liver damage have been reported with this medication; therefore, if symptoms of liver dysfunction occur, patients should consult a doctor promptly. Additionally, for diabetic patients, taking this medication may improve blood sugar control, which might necessitate adjustments in the dosages of antidiabetic agents or insulin. Excessive weight loss can increase the risk of gallstones, so it is crucial to control the rate of weight loss. This medication, like other weight-loss drugs, may be misused in inappropriate patients such as those with anorexia nervosa or binge-eating disorder, so caution is warranted. This medication may affect blood coagulation; therefore, blood coagulation status should be monitored periodically, especially for patients taking anticoagulants, who require additional caution. This medication may decrease the concentration of cyclosporine in the blood when taken together, so it is best not to take them simultaneously; if necessary, a minimum interval of more than 3 hours should be maintained. Furthermore, caution is needed when combining this medication with antiepileptics, as there is a reported risk of seizures. Pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication, and safety and efficacy in children under 12 years of age have not been established. There is also a lack of sufficient clinical data regarding the elderly, so caution is needed. No serious adverse reactions have been reported with overdose; however, monitoring is recommended for 24 hours following an overdose. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored in its original packaging to protect it from light and moisture.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a tightly closed container to protect it from air, light, and moisture. It is also advisable to keep it in a cool place at a temperature below 25 degrees Celsius.
