Improvement of symptoms in Alzheimer's type dementia
This medication is used for the treatment of symptoms of Alzheimer's type dementia. It helps alleviate symptoms of dementia such as memory decline and cognitive dysfunction, improving the patient's ability to perform daily activities.
Adults: Administer 5 mg of Donepezil Hydrochloride once daily before bedtime. Consider morning dosing if sleep disturbances such as strange dreams, nightmares, or insomnia occur. Normal status is reached 15 days after administration, and the 5 mg dose should be maintained for 4 to 6 weeks. Based on clinical response assessment, the dose can be increased up to 10 mg. When increasing the dose, caution should be taken regarding gastrointestinal adverse reactions. Underweight women over 85 years should not exceed 5 mg per day.
Children: There is no experience in using this medication in children.

Firstly, this medication should not be used in certain patients. Additionally, patients with genetic lactose intolerance or specific lactose enzyme deficiencies should also avoid this medication. Patients with heart disease, particularly those with bradycardia or heart conduction disorders, need to exercise caution when using this medication, as it may lower heart rate or cause arrhythmias. Furthermore, patients with a history of peptic ulcers or those currently taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should use this medication with caution due to the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding or ulcer exacerbation. Patients with asthma or obstructive pulmonary disease should also be cautious, as this medication can exacerbate symptoms due to bronchoconstriction or increased mucus secretion. Patients with extrapyramidal disorders such as Parkinson's disease should administer this medication carefully, as it may worsen their symptoms. Various adverse reactions may occur during the use of this medication. Cardiovascular-related issues include reports of syncope, bradycardia, heart block, and myocardial infarction, while gastrointestinal issues may include ulcers or bleeding. Liver dysfunction or cerebrovascular disorders may also present, and if symptoms occur, patients should consult a healthcare professional immediately. Additionally, neurological adverse reactions such as motor dysfunction, muscle spasms, tremors, involuntary movements, and gait disturbances have also been reported. In rare cases, severe symptoms such as neuroleptic malignant syndrome may occur, requiring caution. This medication may interact with several other drugs. Particularly, when used with medications metabolized in the liver, effects may be enhanced or diminished, so patients must inform healthcare professionals of any current medications. Caution is needed when used in conjunction with drugs affecting heart conduction due to the risk of arrhythmias. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take this medication unless necessary and after discussing with a healthcare professional. The safety of this medication has not been established in children, so it should not be used in pediatric patients. During treatment, dizziness, fatigue, and muscle cramps may occur, necessitating caution while driving or operating machinery. In case of overdose, severe symptoms such as intense nausea, vomiting, bradycardia, and respiratory depression may manifest, requiring immediate emergency intervention, and atropine may be used as an antidote. Finally, this medication should be stored out of reach of children, and transferring it to another container is not advisable for quality and safety reasons.
