This medication is used to treat essential hypertension. It also helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death from cardiovascular disease in high-risk patients aged 55 and older, particularly when ACE inhibitors cannot be used. It is effective for those with cardiovascular disease or end-organ damage due to diabetes, contributing to the protection of cardiovascular health and reduction of risk.

How to take

Adult dose

Telmisartan should be administered orally 40 mg once daily with water, irrespective of meals. If necessary, treatment may start with 20 mg once daily, and can be increased up to a maximum of 80 mg once daily. For reducing cardiovascular disease risk, it is recommended to take 80 mg once daily. For patients with liver impairment, the dosage should not exceed 40 mg once daily.

Precautions

This medication may cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn during pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. It should not be administered to patients with hypersensitivity to this drug, pregnant or breastfeeding women, severe liver impairment patients, hereditary angioedema patients, and certain renal impairment patients. Caution should be exercised for elderly patients, hyperkalemia patients, mild to moderate liver impairment patients, patients with valvular heart disease, and patients with ischemic heart disease. Various adverse reactions may occur during treatment with this medication; hence, special attention should be paid to symptoms such as hypotension, renal function abnormalities, hyperkalemia, and angioedema. For patients with renal impairment or those with reduced blood volume, their condition should be corrected before administration, and appropriate measures should be taken if symptoms of hypotension arise. This drug can interact with other antihypertensives, particularly when used with RAAS agents, increasing the risk of renal function deterioration and hyperkalemia. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not use this medication, and breastfeeding women should avoid taking it or discontinue breastfeeding. It is not recommended for children as safety and efficacy have not been established. In the elderly, close monitoring is required to reduce the risk of stroke due to excessive blood pressure lowering. In case of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, dizziness, acute renal failure may appear, requiring immediate treatment, and this drug is not removed by dialysis. This medication should be kept out of reach of children, and packaging should be opened just before use. Caution is advised when driving or operating machinery, as fainting or dizziness may occur. If abnormal symptoms occur during the course of treatment, prompt consultation with healthcare professionals is required.
