Treatment of chronic constipation symptoms
This medication is used for the treatment of chronic constipation symptoms in adult patients who have failed to achieve symptom relief with laxative therapy.
This medication is taken orally and can be administered at any time of the day, regardless of meals. For adults, the dosage is 2mg once daily. For elderly patients aged 65 and older, the initial dosage is 1mg once daily, which can be increased to 2mg once daily if needed. In patients with severe renal impairment (GFR < 30 ml/min/1.73 m2), the dosage is 1mg once daily, and for mild to moderate renal impairment, dosage adjustment is not necessary.
This medicine should not be used in certain patients. Individuals allergic to the active ingredient or additives, those with severely impaired kidney function, and those with bowel issues should not take this medication. Additionally, since this medication contains lactose, individuals with a genetic intolerance to lactose should also avoid it. In patients with severe kidney impairment, the dose should be reduced and used carefully. Administration should also be cautious in patients with other serious illnesses such as liver, cardiac, pulmonary, or neurological conditions. Those with a history of arrhythmias or ischemic cardiovascular diseases should be particularly careful, and patients with severely impaired liver function should also reduce the dosage. This medication requires caution when used in conjunction with other drugs that can prolong the QTc interval. The most common side effects during treatment with this medication include headaches and gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. These symptoms often occur predominantly at the beginning of treatment and may resolve naturally over time. Rarely, symptoms such as palpitations, dizziness, fatigue, and loss of appetite have also been reported. If palpitations occur suddenly, it is essential to consult a doctor. This medication may decrease the effectiveness of oral contraceptives, so it is advisable to use additional contraceptive methods during severe diarrhea. The potential for drug interactions with this medication is low, but it may cause slightly elevated blood concentrations when taken with certain drugs, so caution is advised. The use of this medication is not recommended during pregnancy, and women of childbearing age should use effective contraceptive methods while taking it. Breastfeeding women should also avoid taking this medication. This medication is not recommended for children or adolescents under the age of 18. Overdose may manifest as headaches, nausea, diarrhea, and treatments may be necessary based on symptoms. In particular, hydration may be needed for dehydration or electrolyte imbalances due to diarrhea and vomiting.
