It may be used in patients who have not previously received diabetes medication or who find it difficult to control blood sugar with monotherapy. It can also be used as a replacement or in combination when sufficient effect is not achieved with monotherapy of metformin or the combination of linagliptin and metformin. It is used in combination with sulfonylureas, insulin, empagliflozin, etc., to further enhance blood sugar control. This medication is used to effectively improve blood sugar control when combined with various treatment methods.
This medication is administered twice daily with meals. The dosage should be determined considering the current treatment regimen, efficacy, and tolerability for each patient, not exceeding the maximum recommended doses of linagliptin 2.5 mg and metformin 1000 mg twice daily. 1. If the patient is not currently being treated with metformin: This medication 2.5/500 mg is to be taken twice a day, one tablet at a time, with 2.5/1
This medication can cause a rare but serious side effect known as lactic acidosis, thus it should not be administered, particularly to patients with poor kidney function or liver dysfunction. Patients who have allergies to the active ingredients of this medication or those with type 1 diabetes, severe kidney disease, acute infections, heart failure, liver impairment, acute alcohol intoxication, etc., should not use this medication. Due to the risk of hypoglycemia, when taken in conjunction with insulin or sulfonylureas, blood sugar levels should be closely monitored, and dosage adjustments may be needed as necessary. If symptoms of lactic acidosis such as muscle cramps, abdominal pain, or severe fatigue occur, immediate consultation with a physician is required, and the use of this medication should be temporarily discontinued in situations where kidney function could rapidly deteriorate. Elderly patients with impaired kidney function or unstable renal function should receive regular kidney function tests. Patients with weak heart function should monitor both cardiac and renal function periodically while taking this medication. If iodinated contrast media is used during radiological examinations, it is advised to discontinue this medication for a certain period before and after the examination, and to also discontinue it for a certain period before and after surgery. Rare side effects such as acute pancreatitis or blistering skin diseases may occur; immediate consultation with a physician is required in case of persistent severe abdominal pain or blisters on the skin. While taking this medication, vitamin B12 levels may decrease, so if there are symptoms of anemia or neurological abnormalities, vitamin B12 testing should be conducted. There may be interactions when used with other medications, particularly those that can affect kidney function or glucose-lowering agents, so caution is necessary. It is advisable for pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, as well as nursing mothers, to avoid using this medication, and it is not recommended for pediatric and adolescent patients. Elderly patients are at higher risk of decreased kidney function and should undergo regular testing; it is safest to avoid the maximum dosage and start from the minimum dosage. In case of overdose, gastrointestinal symptoms and lactic acidosis may present, and immediate medical treatment is required, which may include hemodialysis.
