Adult dose

1. Treatment of herpes zoster Adults: Administer famciclovir 250 mg per dose orally 3 times daily for 7 days. It is preferable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 2. Treatment of first-episode genital herpes Adults: Administer this medicine 250 mg per dose orally 3 times daily for 5 days. It is preferable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 3. Treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes Adults: Administer this medicine 125 mg per dose orally twice daily for 5 days. It is preferable to start treatment during the prodromal period or as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 4. Suppression of recurrent genital herpes Adults: Administer this medicine 250 mg per dose orally twice daily. Discontinue treatment periodically every 6～12 months to assess whether the natural course of the disease has changed. 5. Patients with renal impairment: Because the creatinine clearance of this medicine is decreased in patients with renal impairment, dose adjustment should be undertaken with caution. The dosage for these patients is as follows. 1) Treatment of herpes zoster and first-episode genital herpes: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 30～59: 250 mg per dose twice daily Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 10～29: 250 mg per dose once daily 2) Treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 30～59: 125 mg per dose twice daily Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 10～29: 125 mg per dose once daily 3) Suppression of recurrent genital herpes: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 30～59: 250 mg per dose twice daily Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 10～29: 125 mg per dose twice daily 4) If only serum creatinine is known, creatinine clearance can be calculated using the following formula: Men: {body weight (kg) × (140-age)}/ {72 × serum creatinine (mg/dL)} Women: 0.85 × the value calculated for men 5) Patients with renal impairment undergoing hemodialysis For patients on hemodialysis, administration every 48 hours is preferable, taking the dialysis interval into consideration. Since 4 hours of hemodialysis reduces the plasma concentration of this medicine by approximately 75%, administer this medicine immediately after dialysis. The recommended dose is 250mg for patients with herpes zoster and 125mg for patients with genital herpes. 6. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is necessary in patients with chronic compensated liver disease. There is insufficient treatment experience in patients with overt chronic decompensated liver disease; therefore, a clear recommended dose has not been established.

This medication should not be used in patients who are allergic to this drug or any of its components. It contains lactose, thus patients with a genetic condition that prevents the digestion of lactose should not take it. Patients with impaired kidney function should exercise more caution while using this drug, and dose adjustment may be necessary. This medication may cause symptoms such as headache, nausea, dizziness, and drowsiness, which may occur more frequently in the elderly. Rarely, serious side effects such as thrombocytopenia or acute renal failure may occur, so any unusual symptoms should be reported to a doctor immediately. This drug does not cure genital herpes, so it is important to avoid sexual contact and maintain safe sex practices even during treatment if symptoms persist. If dizziness, drowsiness, or confusion occurs during treatment, it is advisable to avoid driving or operating machinery. Patients with serious liver dysfunction may experience decreased efficacy, so caution is necessary. This medication has the potential for drug interactions, so patients taking probenecid or lamotrigine should inform their physician, and dosage adjustments or monitoring for side effects may be required. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant must consult a physician adequately regarding the need for this medication, and nursing mothers should use it with caution. Safety and efficacy in children under 18 have not been established, so use is not recommended. Elderly patients generally do not require dose adjustments, but those with poor kidney function should have their doses adjusted. In case of overdose, seek medical attention immediately, and hemodialysis may be used to reduce drug concentration. Store this drug in a sealed container to protect it from air and moisture, and keep it in a dry place at temperatures below 30 degrees Celsius, out of reach of children. Be cautious as transferring the medication to another container may cause contamination or quality degradation.
