Treatment of primary nocturnal enuresis (age 5 years and older) and nocturia associated with nocturnal polyuria (adults)
This medication is used to treat primary nocturnal enuresis in children over 5 years old and nocturia symptoms associated with nocturia in adults. It alleviates the symptoms of urinating frequently at night, helping to provide a comfortable sleep. Through treatment, it can improve the discomfort caused by nocturia and the inconvenience in daily life. This medication effectively manages nocturia issues, contributing to an improved quality of life for patients.
Treatment of nocturia associated with nocturnal polyuria (adults only) : Administer desmopressin acetate 0.1mg orally at bedtime. If the effect is insufficient after one week, increase the dose to 0.2mg; if the effect remains insufficient, the dose may be increased at one-week intervals up to 0.4mg. Discontinue treatment if there is no clinical effect within 4 weeks after dose titration. Initiation of treatment with this medicine is not recommended in patients aged 65 years and older. In elderly patients who require treatment, closely monitor serum sodium levels, etc. (Refer to 5. General precautions under Precautions for use.)
Primary nocturnal enuresis (aged 5 years and older) : Administer 0.2mg of desmopressin acetate orally at bedtime. If the effect is insufficient, the dose may be increased to 0.4mg. Whether to continue treatment should be determined after 3 months of treatment, following a treatment-free period of at least 1 week.
Since this medication acts to regulate the body's water balance, fluid intake should be limited to the extent that thirst is relieved, especially for the elderly or patients with specific conditions. Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to this medication or those with certain heart conditions, severely impaired kidney function, etc., should not use it. Additionally, this medication is only intended for nocturia patients with normal blood pressure, and patients with genetic issues like lactose intolerance should also avoid it. Patients with hypertension, chronic kidney disease, women who may become pregnant, children, and the elderly should use this medication cautiously, especially if they have conditions that may lead to fluid and electrolyte imbalances. During the course of treatment with this medication, fluid intake must be strictly limited; otherwise, excessive fluid accumulation in the body may cause symptoms such as headache, nausea, weight gain, and in severe cases, seizures. Especially in the elderly, the risk of hyponatremia increases, so serum sodium levels must be checked before and during treatment. This medication may increase the risk of fluid retention or hyponatremia when used in combination with certain drugs, so if other medications are being taken, it is crucial to consult with a doctor or pharmacist. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should use this medication cautiously, and if breastfeeding, it is advisable to discontinue breastfeeding. In case of overdose, symptoms such as headache, nausea, seizures, and loss of consciousness may occur, and in such cases, immediate medical attention is necessary. This medication does not affect driving or machinery operation, but caution is necessary if abnormal symptoms occur.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a tightly closed container to protect it from air and moisture, and it is best kept at room temperature between 1 to 30 degrees Celsius. Storing it this way helps maintain the medication's efficacy for a longer period.
