This medication is used to prevent and continuously treat asthma. It is also effective in alleviating the symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. In other words, it is a medication that helps manage asthma and improve symptoms of allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication should be taken once daily, preferably in the evening for asthma patients. For patients with both asthma and allergic rhinitis, take one tablet once daily in the evening. This medication should be taken one hour before meals or two hours after meals.

Child dose

Children aged 6 to 14 years should chew 5 mg of Montelukast once daily. This medication should be taken one hour before meals or two hours after meals.

Precautions

This medication is used to treat asthma and allergic rhinitis. This medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, which is broken down into phenylalanine in the body. Therefore, patients with the genetic disorder phenylketonuria should not take this medication. Patients who have an allergic reaction to this medication or its components should also avoid taking it. While taking this medication, side effects such as fatigue, headaches, abdominal pain, fever, cough, nasal congestion, and rash may occur, and if symptoms persist or worsen, consultation with a doctor is necessary. Particularly in children and adolescents, various adverse reactions such as pharyngitis, nausea, diarrhea, and ear infections have been reported, so caution is required. This medication is not intended for the treatment of acute asthma attacks, and patients should always have appropriate emergency medications on hand when acute symptoms occur. Inhaled corticosteroids should not be abruptly discontinued or substituted, and dosage should be adjusted gradually according to a doctor's instructions. Neurological and psychiatric symptoms such as anxiety, depression, hallucinations, and suicidal thoughts may occur during treatment, so such symptoms should be reported to a doctor immediately. To prevent bronchospasm due to exercise, do not use this medication alone; it should be used in combination with inhaled beta-2 agonists. Patients with hypersensitivity to aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should avoid taking such medications while on this treatment. Rarely, serious symptoms such as eosinophilia and vasculitis may occur during treatment, so monitoring by a doctor is necessary. No specific interaction reports have been noted when used with other medications; however, caution is required when taking with drugs that induce liver metabolism. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, this medication should only be taken when absolutely necessary, and consultation with a doctor is required. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, and appropriate treatment should be administered based on symptoms.
