Improvement of blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes
This medication is used to assist in blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes in conjunction with diet and exercise therapy. It may be administered when there is no prior experience with diabetes medication or when blood sugar control is difficult with monotherapy. Additionally, it can be used alternately or in combination when sufficient blood sugar control cannot be achieved with monotherapy of metformin or combination therapy of linagliptin and metformin. It can also be administered to improve blood sugar control in cases where blood sugar control is inadequate despite maximum doses of metformin and sulfonylureas, insulin, or empagliflozin. This medication effectively aids in blood sugar management across multiple treatment stages.
The dosage of this medication is determined according to the patient's condition within the maximum recommended doses of linagliptin 2.5 mg and metformin 1000 mg, not exceeding twice a day. This medication is taken twice daily with meals. 1. In cases not previously treated with metformin: The starting dose is 2.5/500 mg 1 tablet twice a day, with the possibility to increase up to 2.5/1000 mg twice a day if necessary. 2. Metformin
This medication has the potential to cause a serious side effect known as lactic acidosis, so caution is necessary. It should not be used in patients with allergies to its active ingredients or in those with type 1 diabetes, lactic acidosis, or diabetic ketoacidosis. Patients with severely impaired kidney function or in conditions that may cause acute kidney injury should not take this medication. Patients with severely impaired heart or lung function, liver dysfunction, acute alcohol intoxication, or alcoholism should also avoid this medication. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should refrain from using this medication, and those planning a pregnancy should consult a specialist. Caution is advised when using this medication with other blood glucose-lowering agents as there may be a risk of hypoglycemia, especially when combined with sulfonylureas or insulin, which may require dosage adjustments. To reduce the risk of lactic acidosis, kidney function should be regularly monitored, and if symptoms of dehydration, severe infection, or heart failure occur, the use of this medication should be immediately discontinued. It is advisable to temporarily discontinue this medication prior to and after surgery or radiographic iodine contrast examinations. This medication may lower vitamin B12 levels, so it is recommended to regularly check for vitamin B12 deficiency during prolonged use. It may interact with other medications, so patients should inform their doctor or pharmacist of any other medications they are taking. Elderly patients may be at higher risk for decreased kidney function, thus careful dose adjustment and frequent monitoring of kidney function is necessary. Acute pancreatitis or bullous pemphigoid, a skin disease, may occur during treatment; patients should consult medical personnel immediately if abdominal pain or skin abnormalities develop. In case of overdose, there is an increased risk of lactic acidosis, so immediate medical attention is required if symptoms appear. This medication is not recommended for children or pediatric patients under the age of 10. It should be stored out of reach of children, kept away from moisture, and not transferred to other containers.
