This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It lowers the risk of heart disease and stroke in high-risk adult patients with a history of coronary heart disease, diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, or stroke. It also effectively reduces total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol in patients with dyslipidemia such as hypercholesterolemia and increases HDL-cholesterol, improving blood lipid levels. It is also used in pediatric patients with familial hypercholesterolemia to lower cholesterol levels in conjunction with dietary therapy. Overall, this medication is used to maintain cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
The recommended initial starting dose for this medication is 40 mg once daily, and for hyperlipidemia, the usual initial starting dose is 20 mg once daily in the evening. Patients with mild to moderate hypercholesterolemia may start with 10 mg, taking 5 to 40 mg once daily in the evening. Patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia should take 40 mg once daily in the evening. Elderly patients are recommended to start at 20 mg
