This medication helps prevent the occurrence of asthma and aids in its ongoing treatment. It is also effective in alleviating various symptoms of seasonal and year-round allergic rhinitis. Therefore, it is used for the improvement of asthma and allergic rhinitis symptoms.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults and adolescents 15 years and older should take 10 mg of montelukast orally once a day. This medication should be taken 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals. Patients with both asthma and allergic rhinitis should take 1 tablet, 1 pack, or 1 film once daily in the evening.

Child dose

Children aged 6 to 14 years should take 5 mg of montelukast once daily, chewing it or placing it on the tongue to dissolve without water. Children aged 4 to 5 years should take 4 mg of montelukast once daily, chewing it.

Precautions

This medication is used to alleviate the symptoms of asthma and allergic rhinitis. Significant neuropsychiatric symptoms may occur during the use of this medication, so both patients and caregivers should carefully observe for mental changes such as restlessness, anxiety, depression, hallucinations, and suicidal thoughts. If such symptoms arise, discontinue its use immediately and consult a physician. This medication contains an artificial sweetener called aspartame, so patients with phenylketonuria should limit its use. In the case of formulations containing lactose, patients with genetic issues such as galactose intolerance or lactase deficiency should not take this medication. This medication is not an emergency treatment for acute asthma attacks, and while it can be continued during asthma exacerbations, appropriate emergency medications must be carried if needed. For the treatment of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, it is important not to use it alone and to also use inhaled beta-agonists. Patients who are hypersensitive to aspirin should not take aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs while using this medication. During the use of this medication, various adverse reactions may occur, including liver function abnormalities, skin rashes, gastrointestinal disturbances, and respiratory symptoms; thus, symptoms should be monitored carefully. Pregnant women should only take this medication if the necessity is clear, and breastfeeding women should also use it cautiously. It can be used in children and the elderly but must adhere to the dosage and safety as instructed by a physician based on age. In case of overdose, specific antidotes are not available, so general symptomatic treatment and monitoring are required. Finally, this medication should be stored out of reach of children and should not be transferred to another container.

Hives, toxic epidermal necrolysis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, angioedema, palpitations, nosebleeds, liver abnormalities (increased ALT and AST, cholestatic hepatitis, hepatocellular damage, mixed liver damage), seizures, suicidal thoughts and behaviors (including suicide), shortness of breath, asthma attacks, convulsions, confusion, vision disturbances, paralysis, severe swelling or swelling associated with increased blood pressure.
