Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Blood sugar control for patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used to assist in controlling blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone alongside diet and exercise therapy, and if blood sugar control is insufficient, it may be combined with other hypoglycemic agents or insulin. It can especially be used in combination with metformin in cases where treatment with sulfonylureas or metformin alone is inadequate. This helps improve the patient's blood sugar control status.

How to take

Adult dose

Once daily, start at 1 mg of Glimepiride. If needed, the dose can be increased by 1 mg at intervals of 1-2 weeks. Generally, doses above 4 mg do not yield additional effects, but some patients may increase the dose to 6 mg or 8 mg. If 4 mg daily is not effective, consider switching to or adding insulin therapy. Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients who have insulin-dependent diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or are in a comatose state. Patients who have had allergic reactions to this medication, its components, or similar classes of drugs should also not receive it. There is no experience using this medication in patients with severely impaired liver or kidney function; in such cases, transitioning to insulin therapy is recommended. Women who are pregnant or potentially pregnant and breastfeeding mothers should not use this medication. Patients with severe infections, those undergoing surgery, or those with severe trauma may require insulin therapy. Patients with diarrhea or vomiting that prevents proper absorption of food are at risk of hypoglycemia and should be cautious. This medication contains lactose and should not be administered to patients with genetic disorders related to lactose. During the first week of dosing, the risk of hypoglycemia is high, so blood sugar levels should be monitored particularly carefully. Elderly patients, those with poor nutritional status, irregular eating habits, those who consume alcohol frequently, and patients with weak liver or kidney function are more vulnerable to hypoglycemia. Additionally, patients with other endocrine disorders or those taking multiple medications may also face an increased risk of hypoglycemia. Patients must inform medical professionals about hypoglycemic symptoms and risk factors and may require dosage adjustments if necessary. This medication effectively lowers blood sugar levels, and hypoglycemic symptoms may occur. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include headache, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, anxiety, confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, and in severe cases, loss of consciousness or coma. If hypoglycemia occurs, it is essential to quickly raise blood sugar by consuming sugar, and it is advisable to always have sugar or sugary drinks available for consumption. Additionally, during the early stages of taking this medication, blurred vision, gastrointestinal disorders, liver function abnormalities, blood disorders, and allergic reactions may occur, so patients should consult a doctor immediately if any unusual symptoms appear. When taking this medication, regular meals, exercise, and weight management are important, and blood sugar control status should be checked regularly. In particular, during high stress, infections, or surgeries, blood sugar control may become difficult, so consultation with medical professionals is necessary. This medication requires dosage adjustments when administered to elderly patients with impaired kidney function. When taking this medication alongside other drugs, blood sugar control may be affected, so all current medications must be reported to healthcare providers. Some medications may increase or decrease the effects of this medication, particularly beta-blockers, antibiotics, anticoagulants, and corticosteroids may interact. In cases of overdose, there may be severe hypoglycemia necessitating immediate emergency treatment, and appropriate treatment should be followed as per the physician's instructions. This medication has not been proven safe and effective for children, so it should not be used in patients under 18 years of age. Medication should be stored out of reach of children and kept in the original container; changing the container arbitrarily is not allowed.
