This medication helps to prevent and manage asthma on an ongoing basis. It is also effective in relieving symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. Therefore, it is used for the management of asthma and allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is to be taken once daily, preferably in the evening for asthma patients. For allergic rhinitis patients, dosing time should be determined based on the patient's condition. Patients with both asthma and allergic rhinitis should take one tablet once daily in the evening. This medication should be administered one hour before meals or two hours after meals.

Child dose

Children aged 6 to 14 years should chew 5 mg of montelukast once daily. This medication should be administered one hour before meals or two hours after meals.

Precautions

This medication may cause severe neuropsychiatric adverse effects. If symptoms such as anxiety, aggression, restlessness, depression, hallucinations, or suicidal thoughts occur during use, consult a physician immediately. This medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame; therefore, patients with phenylketonuria should avoid taking it, and caution regarding aspartame intake is advised. This medication contains lactose, and patients with lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders should not take this medication. This product is not intended for the treatment of acute asthma attacks, so appropriate emergency medication should be used during acute symptoms, and it should be taken regularly for asthma control. Do not use alone to treat exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, and use inhaled bronchodilators as needed. Patients with aspirin hypersensitivity should avoid taking this medication while using aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Eosinophilia or symptoms of vasculitis may occur during treatment, thus monitoring by a physician is necessary. There is generally no significant concern regarding interactions with other medications, but monitoring according to a physician's instructions is needed when used with specific medications. During pregnancy, this medication should only be used cautiously when necessary, and caution is also required during breastfeeding. It can be safely used in children and elderly patients, but appropriate dosage and caution according to age are necessary. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so general treatment and observation are important, and it should be kept out of reach of children. During treatment, if asthma symptoms worsen or new symptoms appear, consult a physician and do not stop taking the medication or reduce the dosage of other medications abruptly.
