Treatment of respiratory and genitourinary infections (including gonorrhea), skin and soft tissue infections, and early Lyme disease
Cefuroxime is a broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic that is stable to beta-lactamase and is highly effective against strains resistant to ampicillin and amoxicillin. This drug is used to treat upper respiratory infections such as otitis media, sinusitis, tonsillitis, and pharyngitis. It is also effective for lower respiratory tract infections such as acute and chronic bronchitis and pneumonia. It can be used to treat genitourinary infections such as pyelonephritis, cystitis, and urethritis. It is useful in treating skin and soft tissue infections, such as furuncles, impetigo, and pustular bacterial infections, and is also used for the treatment of gonorrhea, such as simple acute gonococcal urethritis and gonococcal cervicitis. Additionally, it is effective in treating early Lyme disease, making it useful for a variety of infectious diseases.
For optimal absorption, take after meals. 1. Adults and children aged 12 years and older 1) Most infections Administer 250mg twice daily. 2) Severe lower respiratory tract infections, pneumonia, severe infections, or suspected infections caused by organisms with reduced susceptibility Administer 500mg twice daily. 3) Urinary tract infections Administer 250mg twice daily. 4) Uncomplicated gonorrhea Administer 1g as a single dose. 5) Lyme disease Administer 500mg twice daily for 14 days (10~21 days). 3. Patients with renal impairment Cefuroxime is excreted mainly by the kidneys. To compensate for delayed excretion in patients with significant renal impairment, it is recommended that the cefuroxime dose be reduced as follows. Creatinine clearance T1/2 (hours) Recommended dose ≥ 30 mL/min/1.73m2 1.4 - 2.4 No dosage adjustment required (standard dose: 125mg-500mg twice daily) 10 - 29 mL/min/1.73m2 4.6 Administer a standard single dose every 24 hours < 10 mL/min/1.73m2 16.8 Administer a standard single dose every 48 hours Patients on hemodialysis 2 - 4 Administer an additional standard single dose at the end of each dialysis session
2. Infants and children younger than 12 years 1) Most infections Administer 125mg twice daily. However, for otitis media in children aged 2 years and older and for severe infections, administer 250mg twice daily. 2) Lyme disease Administer 250mg twice daily for 14 days (10~21 days). There is insufficient experience with use in infants younger than 3 months. For the treatment of infections caused by Streptococcus pyogenes (group A beta-hemolytic), this drug should be administered for 7~10 days. This drug must not be divided and is therefore not suitable for treating patients who cannot swallow tablets, such as young infants and children.
This drug should not be administered to patients with a hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics. Caution should be exercised when using this drug in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to penicillins or other beta-lactam antibiotics, or in individuals or family members with a predisposition to frequent allergic reactions such as bronchial asthma, rash, or urticaria. Generally, side effects of this drug are mild and temporary; however, severe allergic reactions, such as skin rash, urticaria, itching, drug fever, and anaphylaxis can occur rarely, and medical personnel should be notified immediately if symptoms occur. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as headache, dizziness, diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain may occur commonly; in severe cases, pseudomembranous colitis may develop, so treatment should be stopped and medical attention sought if diarrhea or abdominal pain persists. Long-term use of this drug may lead to excessive growth of Candida species or resistant bacteria, and treatment should be discontinued if these symptoms occur. Dizziness or other symptoms may occur when driving or operating machinery, so caution is necessary. Care should be taken when this drug is used with other diuretics or aminoglycoside antibiotics as it may put stress on the kidneys. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should only use this drug if its benefits outweigh the risks, and breastfeeding individuals should be cautious as the drug may be transmitted through breast milk. Safety in infants under 3 months has not been established, and it is recommended to use a dry syrup formulation in children due to its bitter taste. The elderly may experience more pronounced adverse effects due to decreased bodily function, so dose and intervals should be adjusted and closely monitored.
