View approved original text

Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a condition in which the prostate enlarges, causing difficulty in urination. This medication helps reduce the size of hypertrophied prostatic tissue and facilitates smooth urination to improve symptoms. Additionally, it lowers the frequency of urgent urinary disorders, such as acute urinary retention. It reduces the need for surgical treatment, thereby preventing invasive procedures like prostatectomy. Overall, it alleviates discomfort caused by prostatic hypertrophy and enhances the quality of daily life.

How to take

Adult dose

As finasteride, orally administer 5 mg once daily regardless of meals. Even if symptoms improve during treatment, at least 6 months of therapy is required.

Precautions

This medication should not be used by children and women. In particular, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not handle broken pieces of this medication, as it may affect male fetuses. While taking this medication, depression or mood changes may occur, so mental status should be closely monitored, and if any abnormal symptoms appear, medical consultation should be sought immediately. This medication should not be used by individuals allergic to it or its components, or those with lactose intolerance, soybean oil, or peanut allergies. Patients with liver dysfunction or lipid metabolism issues such as hyperlipidemia, diabetic dyslipidemia, or pancreatitis should use this medication with caution, and blood lipid levels should be monitored if necessary. Generally, this medication is well-tolerated, but sexual dysfunction-related adverse reactions such as erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, and ejaculation disorders may occur, and gynecomastia, breast pain, and skin rashes have been reported in some patients. There is a reported possibility of male breast cancer with long-term use, although a direct causal relationship with this medication is not clear. During treatment with this medication, the risk of high-grade prostate cancer may increase slightly, so regular check-ups and monitoring of PSA levels are necessary. No interactions with other medications are known, and it generally does not affect drug metabolism, so there are usually no issues with concomitant administration. Pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication, especially since it may affect the sexual development of male fetuses during pregnancy. This medication has not been shown to be safe and effective in children, so it is not used. It can be used in the elderly without special dosage adjustments, but therapeutic effects appear gradually, so patience is needed during administration. This medication lowers prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, so this should be considered when interpreting PSA test results, and if PSA levels rise during treatment, further evaluation may be necessary. There is no specific antidote in case of overdose, so appropriate treatment should be received according to the physician's instructions. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers for safety.
