Summary

Main use
Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, improvement of hyperlipidemia
Who uses it
Adults · Children
Adult dosage
For hyperlipidemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily. Patients requiring greater reductions in LDL cholesterol may start at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. The dosage range for this medication is 10 to 80 mg once daily. The initial and maintenance doses should be individualized based on treatment goals and response, and after initiation and/or dose adjustment, lipid levels should be analyzed within 2 to 4 weeks to adjust the dose accordingly. The goal of treatment is to lower LDL cholesterol levels; therefore, it is recommended to use LDL cholesterol levels for evaluating the start of treatment and treatment response. However, if LDL cholesterol levels cannot be monitored, total cholesterol levels should be used to monitor treatment response. In patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the dosing is 10 to 80 mg once daily, administered in conjunction with other lipid-lowering therapies (e.g., LDL apheresis) or when such therapies are not feasible.
Children's dosage
For pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10 to 17), the recommended initial dose is 10 mg once daily. The maximum recommended dose is 20 mg once daily, with dosage adjustments based on the individual patient's treatment goals.

It is also used to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in patients with primary hyperlipidemia and dyslipidemia. This medication helps manage cholesterol levels in young patients who have risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. Overall, it is used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and treat hyperlipidemia.
