It also aids in the treatment of herpes zoster virus infections, particularly in alleviating acute pain. It is used for treating chickenpox and can be applied to children over 2 years of age. However, the effectiveness for post-herpetic neuralgia has not yet been definitively proven. Overall, this medication is widely used for the treatment of various viral skin and mucosal infections.

This medication should not be used in patients who have had allergic reactions to this medication, its components, or valacyclovir. Patients with impaired kidney function may experience more side effects, so caution is advised when using this medication. Patients with compromised liver function should also be administered this medication with care, as their liver function may worsen. Extra caution is required for children and infants, and elderly patients are also at higher risk of renal impairment and adverse reactions, necessitating careful monitoring. Severe allergic reactions, such as anaphylactic shock, may rarely occur; thus, if symptoms like low blood pressure, difficulty breathing, or chest tightness occur during administration, stop the treatment immediately and seek appropriate treatment. Skin rashes, fever, blisters, and hives may appear, and in severe cases, serious skin conditions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome or Lyell syndrome may develop, requiring cessation of treatment upon symptom onset. Symptoms of a mental or neurological nature can include altered consciousness, confusion, hallucinations, seizures, drowsiness, and anxiety; these symptoms may be more frequent in the elderly or those with reduced kidney function. Kidney problems may arise, with symptoms such as renal failure, hematuria, and proteinuria, so it is important to periodically check kidney function. Blood-related abnormalities can manifest as leukopenia, anemia, bleeding, and purpura; notify healthcare providers immediately if such symptoms occur. Liver dysfunction or symptoms of jaundice or hepatitis may appear, necessitating observation for symptoms along with liver function tests. Gastrointestinal symptoms may include gastritis, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, and treatment should be stopped if symptoms are severe. Adequate hydration is necessary while taking this medication, and preventing dehydration is particularly important during high-dose administration. This medication is most effective when given early in the course of illness, so treatment should begin as soon as symptoms appear. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should consult a physician regarding the use of this medication, as it may affect the fetus. Lactating women should discontinue breastfeeding during treatment since this medication’s components may pass into breast milk. Overdosage can result in kidney damage and central nervous system symptoms, and therefore, dosage should be strictly adhered to, with immediate contact with a medical facility in the event of overdose. This medication may interact with other drugs; therefore, inform healthcare providers of any concomitant medications.
