This medication helps prevent the occurrence of asthma and provides continuous treatment. It is also used to relieve symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. It is effective in managing and preventing respiratory disease symptoms.

How to take

Adult dose

For adults and adolescents aged 15 years and older, 10 mg of Montelukast should be taken orally once daily. This medication should be taken one hour before or two hours after meals.

Precautions

This medicine is used to treat asthma and allergic rhinitis, and it may cause abnormal psychiatric symptoms; therefore, patients should be monitored for symptoms such as agitation, anxiety, depression, hallucinations, and suicidal thoughts during treatment. If new psychiatric symptoms or behavioral changes occur, consult a doctor immediately and consider discontinuation if necessary. This medication contains aspartame, an artificial sweetener, and should be avoided by patients with phenylketonuria, a genetic disorder. Additionally, patients with a genetic condition that prevents them from digesting lactose should not use this medication. Common side effects may include weakness, fatigue, headache, abdominal pain, indigestion, cough, nasal congestion, and rash, and these symptoms generally appear mild. Children and elderly patients can use this medication; however, attention should be paid to the varying rates of side effects and symptoms according to age. This medication is not for use in acute asthma attacks; therefore, a fast-acting bronchodilator should be carried and used during acute symptoms. It is advisable to avoid taking aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs while taking this medication, especially in patients with aspirin hypersensitivity. There have been no significant interactions reported when this medication is used with other asthma treatments; however, medical supervision is required when used with certain liver metabolism inducers. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a physician before using this medication and should only be administered if necessary. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so general symptomatic treatment and clinical monitoring are needed. Lastly, this medication should be stored out of reach of children and not transferred to a different container.
