Treatment of essential hypertension and heart failure (intolerance to ACE inhibitors), reduction of mortality risk post-myocardial infarction
This medicine is used to treat essential hypertension and is helpful in improving symptoms of heart failure (NYHA class II to IV) in patients intolerant to ACE inhibitors. It is also used to reduce the risk of mortality in stable patients with left ventricular dysfunction and reduced contractility after myocardial infarction. Therefore, it is effective in controlling essential hypertension, alleviating symptoms of heart failure, and reducing the risk of death after myocardial infarction.
1. Essential Hypertension - Adults: It is recommended to orally administer 80 mg of Valsartan once daily. - If blood pressure control is inadequate, the dosage may be increased to 160 mg once daily or used in combination with diuretics, with a maximum dosage of 320 mg once daily. - Elderly patients (aged 75 years and older): Begin treatment with 40 mg once daily. - Dosage adjustment is needed according to creatinine clearance in patients with renal impairment.
The safety and efficacy have not been established in children and adolescents under 18 years of age.
This medication may cause serious harm to the fetus when taken during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimester, so it must be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Pregnant women, women who may become pregnant, and breastfeeding women should not take this medication. It is not safe to use in patients with severely impaired liver function or specific liver diseases. Patients with hereditary angioedema or a history of angioedema should not take this medication. It is not administered to patients with severe renal impairment or specific kidney diseases. In diabetic patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, this medication should not be taken with certain concomitant medications. Caution is required when prescribing this medication to elderly patients or those with high serum potassium levels, and to patients with mild to moderate liver dysfunction. Patients with heart valve disease or cardiovascular diseases should be cautious when taking this medication due to the risk of complications resulting from blood pressure reduction. This medication may lower blood pressure sharply; therefore, patients at risk of hypotension should start at a low dosage and be closely monitored. Special care is needed when administering to patients undergoing dialysis, those with strict salt restrictions, and patients shortly before surgery. Caution is also advised when taken with other antihypertensives, certain diuretics, and potassium-sparing medications, as drug interactions may increase the risk of side effects. This medication contains the dye Yellow No. 5, so patients allergic to this substance should use it cautiously. Side effects such as headache, dizziness, fatigue, cough, dyspepsia may occur during treatment. If any abnormal symptoms persist or worsen, consult a doctor immediately. Patients with heart failure or post-myocardial infarction may experience changes in renal function, so regular kidney function testing is necessary. This medication may raise serum potassium levels; therefore, patients with hyperkalemia or those at risk of hyperkalemia should monitor serum potassium levels periodically. The safety and efficacy of this medication have not been established in children and adolescents under 18 years of age, so it is advisable not to use it in this age group. Overdose can lead to hypotension, decreased consciousness, etc., so the dosage must be strictly followed, and if an overdose occurs, contact a medical institution immediately. Store this medication out of reach of children and do not transfer it to another container for safety. Caution is required as dizziness may occur while driving or operating machinery.
Angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, throat, tongue), severe allergic reactions, renal impairment, hepatitis, hepatic abnormalities (jaundice), hyperkalemia, shock, syncope, loss of consciousness, acute renal failure, rhabdomyolysis, agranulocytosis, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, vesicular dermatitis, severe rash, blisters, skin peeling, pain in mucous membranes of mouth/eyes, vasculitis, respiratory distress, interstitial pneumonia, confusion, visual disturbances, paralysis, hypoglycemia
