How it is given

Adult administration

For the treatment of herpes simplex virus infections, administer acyclovir 200 mg five times a day at 4-hour intervals for 5 days. In cases of severe initial infections, treatment may be extended. For severely immunocompromised patients or patients with gastrointestinal absorption issues, the single dose may be increased to 400 mg or changed to intravenous administration. For the prevention of herpes simplex infections in immunocompetent patients, administer 200 mg four times a day.

Child administration

For children over 2 years, administer the same dosage as for adults. For children under 2 years, administer half of the adult dosage. For treatment of chickenpox in children over 2 years, administer 20 mg per kg of body weight per dose (maximum 800 mg per dose).

Precautions

This medication should not be used by patients who have had allergic reactions to this drug, its components, or valacyclovir. Patients with impaired kidney function should use this medication cautiously, as there is a risk of adverse reactions affecting the mental or nervous system. Caution should also be exercised when administering this medication to patients with liver impairment, as liver function may deteriorate further. Children, especially infants and young children, should use this medication with extra care and only as absolutely necessary. In elderly patients, reduced kidney function may increase the likelihood of side effects due to prolonged drug retention in the body, so caution is required. While using this medication, rare but serious allergic reactions such as anaphylactic shock may occur, so if symptoms like low blood pressure, difficulty breathing, or chest tightness appear, discontinue the drug immediately and seek medical attention. Hypersensitivity reactions such as rash, fever, blisters, and hives may occur, and if these symptoms arise, the drug should be stopped, and appropriate treatment should be obtained. Severe skin abnormalities such as hair loss, severe dermatitis, and Stevens-Johnson syndrome have also been reported, so skin condition should be monitored closely. Various neuropsychiatric symptoms such as confusion, hallucinations, seizures, drowsiness, anxiety, and others may occur, more frequently in the elderly or those with weakened kidney function. There may be kidney function issues, so routine testing for urine abnormalities or elevated kidney values is necessary. Various side effects such as blood abnormalities, liver function impairment, gastrointestinal disturbances, general malaise, headaches, joint pain, and cardiac dysrhythmia have been reported, and medical consultation should be sought if symptoms occur. During the treatment period, adequate hydration should be ensured to prevent dehydration and reduce kidney burden. This drug is most effective when administered during the initial appearance of symptoms, that is, within 5 days for shingles and within 3 days for chickenpox. Patients with recurrent genital herpes should consult their physician about whether to continue treatment after 1 year. Precautions should be taken when engaging in hazardous activities such as driving or operating machinery, as consciousness disturbances or drowsiness may occur, especially in patients with impaired kidney function. There may be drug interactions when used with other medications, so if you are taking medications like probenecid, cimetidine, theophylline, or mycophenolate mofetil, you must inform your healthcare provider. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should carefully consider the benefits and risks of using this medication, as it could affect the fetus. The components of this drug may be transmitted through breast milk, so it is advisable to stop breastfeeding during treatment. Careful administration is required for children and elderly patients, and particularly for newborns or low-birth-weight infants, as safety has not been established; it should only be used when absolutely necessary. In cases of overdose, symptoms like coma, seizures, and renal dysfunction may occur, so immediate medical attention is required, and blood dialysis may be necessary. This drug, when administered in high doses, may affect genetic anomalies or reproductive function, but no significant problems have been reported at standard dosages.
