Treatment of gastrointestinal diseases such as gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastritis
This medication is effective in treating ulcers that occur in the stomach and duodenum, gastritis, and conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome associated with excessive gastric acid secretion. It is also used in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease and is administered to prevent Mendelson's syndrome during preoperative anesthesia. It helps prevent and treat ulcers that may occur postoperatively and those due to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). This medication protects the gastric mucosa and regulates gastric acid secretion to alleviate symptoms and aid recovery. Therefore, it is widely used for various gastric-related ailments.
Typically administered orally, 1 tablet twice daily before breakfast and before bedtime, regardless of meals. 1) Gastric and duodenal ulcers: Administer 1 tablet twice daily or 2 tablets once daily before bedtime. Particularly for patients with duodenal ulcers, administer 2 tablets twice daily before breakfast and bedtime. 2) Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: Administer 1 tablet twice daily or 2 tablets once daily before bedtime for 8 weeks.
This medication should not be used in patients undergoing dialysis. Patients who have had allergic reactions to this medication or its components should also refrain from taking it. It should not be administered to patients who have previously experienced a rare disease called acute porphyria, as it may worsen symptoms. Patients with poor kidney function or those who have undergone upper gastrointestinal surgery should avoid this medication. It should not be given to pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, nor to premature or newborn infants. Patients on a diet that limits potassium intake should also avoid using this medication. This medication should be used cautiously in patients with compromised liver function, a history of drug allergies, the elderly, or those with a history of kidney issues. Especially for the elderly or those with a history of peptic ulcers taking NSAIDs, regular monitoring is necessary. This medication may mask the symptoms of stomach cancer, so patients with gastric ulcers or middle-aged patients who have newly developed indigestion should confirm that it is not a malignant disease before use. Patients with Helicobacter pylori infections related to gastric or duodenal ulcers must undergo concurrent treatment to eradicate the bacteria. For critically ill patients in intensive care, there is a risk of bezoar formation after administration of this medication, so caution is needed. Patients with hypophosphatemia may experience interference with phosphate absorption due to the aluminum component in this medication. Patients who have difficulty swallowing should be cautious, as respiratory complications may arise after taking this medication. While taking this medication, it is very rare to experience serious allergic reactions such as anaphylactic shock, so if symptoms appear, discontinue use immediately and seek appropriate treatment. Hypersensitivity reactions such as skin rash, hives, angioedema, fever, bronchospasm, hypotension, chest pain may occur, and in such cases, the medication should also be discontinued. Decreased blood cell counts, abnormal liver function, arrhythmias, gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain), and neurological symptoms (dizziness, confusion, seizures) may occur rarely, hence any unusual symptoms should be discussed with a physician. It is important to avoid prolonged use and to monitor treatment progress carefully while using the lowest effective dose. Elderly patients or those with chronic diseases may have an increased risk of pneumonia while taking this medication, thus should be cautioned. If dizziness or drowsiness occurs during use of this medication, it is safest to avoid driving or operating hazardous machinery. There may be interactions with other medications, so if taking any other drugs, it is essential to inform healthcare professionals. It is safe to avoid using this medication for pregnant or nursing women. Safety in children has not been sufficiently established, so it is advisable not to administer it to minors. In case of overdose, emergency treatment such as vomiting or gastric lavage may be necessary, and in some cases, blood dialysis may be beneficial.
