Treatment of gastrointestinal diseases such as stomach and duodenal ulcers, and gastritis
This medication is used to treat ulcers in the stomach and duodenum, gastritis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. It also helps prevent postoperative ulcers. Additionally, it is administered for the treatment of stomach and duodenal ulcers caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and to prevent Mendelson syndrome prior to anesthesia. It is effectively used for various gastrointestinal diseases.
Usually administered orally as 1 tablet twice daily, regardless of meals, in the morning and before bedtime. 1) Stomach and duodenal ulcers: Administer either 1 tablet twice daily or 2 tablets once daily before bedtime. Especially for duodenal ulcer patients, administering 2 tablets twice daily in the morning and before bedtime can achieve a higher treatment rate. 2) Gastroesophageal reflux disease: Administer 1 tablet twice daily for 8 weeks.
This medication should not be used in patients undergoing dialysis or those with impaired kidney function. It should also be avoided if there is an allergy to this drug or any of its components. Extra caution is advised for patients with a history of rare diseases such as acute porphyria, as this drug may exacerbate symptoms. It is also safer not to use this drug in patients who have undergone gastric surgery, in pregnant women or those who could become pregnant, and in premature or newborn infants. Patients on a potassium-restricted diet may not find this medication suitable. This drug should be used cautiously in patients with impaired liver function, a history of drug allergy, elderly patients, and those with a past history of kidney disease. When taken concurrently with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, gastrointestinal side effects may particularly occur, necessitating regular check-ups. This drug can mask the symptoms of stomach cancer, therefore patients who have gastric ulcers or new dyspeptic symptoms emerging in middle-aged or older individuals should use it only after confirming malignancy. Patients with stomach or duodenal ulcers associated with Helicobacter pylori infection should undergo bactericidal treatment concurrently. For critically ill ICU patients, caution is required as gastric stones may develop. In patients with hypophosphatemia, the aluminum component of this drug may interfere with phosphate absorption. Patients with swallowing difficulties are at risk of respiratory complications and should exercise care. While taking this medication, rare serious allergic reactions, such as anaphylactic shock, may occur, so it is crucial to discontinue use and seek medical assistance if symptoms arise. Allergic symptoms such as skin rash, hives, angioedema, fever, and bronchospasm may also occur, and the use should be discontinued if these symptoms appear. Blood tests have rarely reported decreases in white blood cells or platelets, liver function abnormalities, so if unusual symptoms arise, tests should be performed, and if necessary, the medication should be discontinued. Gastrointestinal side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain, which may result in stool discoloration; however, this does not require special treatment. CNS symptoms such as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, seizures, and insomnia may occur rarely, and if symptoms are severe, a consultation with a doctor is recommended. Musculoskeletal symptoms such as muscle pain or arthralgia have been reported rarely, and treatment should be stopped immediately if severe muscle damage symptoms appear. It is important to use the minimum effective dose while closely monitoring the treatment course without long-term use. Elderly patients or those with chronic lung disease and diabetes may experience an increased risk of pneumonia while taking this medication. Avoid driving or operating dangerous machinery if dizziness or drowsiness occurs while taking this drug. There may be interactions with other medications, so especially inform healthcare providers if you are taking anticoagulants, antibiotics, or anticonvulsants. It is safer for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding not to use this medication. Safety in children has not been established, and it is not recommended for use in children. In case of overdose, emergency measures such as vomiting or gastric lavage may be necessary, and if required, blood dialysis can be used to remove the drug.
