Mucolytic and expectorant effects in acute and chronic respiratory diseases
This medication helps to thin mucus in patients with acute and chronic respiratory diseases, facilitating its expulsion and aiding in the easy clearance of phlegm. This in turn helps to ease breathing and relieve coughing. It is primarily used when respiratory mucus is excessive or viscous, improving symptoms. These effects make it effective in treating respiratory diseases.
Adults: The usual dose is 300 mg of erdosteine per dose, taken orally 2–3 times daily. When used for acute respiratory disease, do not administer continuously for more than 10 days.
This medication should not be used by certain patients. Individuals allergic to this drug or its components should avoid using it. Patients with liver cirrhosis or certain enzyme deficiencies should not take this drug, as its metabolites may be harmful. Patients with peptic ulcers are also advised not to use this medication. Those with severe kidney dysfunction or significantly impaired liver function should avoid taking this drug. Additionally, patients with slightly reduced liver function should use this medication with caution, ensuring that the daily dose does not exceed 300 mg. This drug contains Yellow No. 5, so those who are allergic or have had hypersensitive reactions to this ingredient should take it cautiously. In case of overdose, symptoms such as sweating, dizziness, and flushing may occur. Neurological and respiratory symptoms like headaches, cold symptoms, and breathing difficulties may also arise. Gastrointestinal side effects may include altered taste, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, heartburn, etc. Skin allergic reactions such as hives, erythema, and eczema may also occur, so caution is advised. Taking this medicine with other cough medications can complicate phlegm clearance due to cough suppression, increasing the risk of bronchial infections, hence special caution is required. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid taking this medication due to insufficient safety confirmation.
