This medication helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and angina in adults with cardiovascular risk factors and in patients with type 2 diabetes. It also lowers the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, need for vascular procedures, hospitalization for congestive heart failure, and angina in patients with coronary heart disease. In patients with hyperlipidemia, it reduces total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo-B protein, and triglyceride levels while increasing HDL cholesterol levels to improve health. It is particularly effective in managing dyslipidemia in young pediatric patients with a family history or cardiovascular risk factors. This medication is used in conjunction with dietary therapy for the management of cardiovascular disease and hyperlipidemia.

Precautions

This medication must be discontinued if muscle-related disorders are suspected or if muscle enzyme levels are significantly elevated. Patients with conditions that may affect kidney function, such as acute infections, hypotension, or after major surgery, may need to temporarily interrupt use of this medication. It should not be used by individuals with allergies to this drug or its ingredients, severe liver dysfunction, muscle disease, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, and children under 10 years old. Individuals with a history of alcohol abuse, liver disease, impaired kidney function, or hypothyroidism should consult their doctor for careful management before use. Although this drug is generally well tolerated, some patients may experience various side effects, such as muscle pain, dyspepsia, headache, and allergic reactions, and should report any unusual symptoms immediately. Particularly, if muscle pain or weakness, fatigue, fever is present, rapid testing for possible muscle damage is necessary. This drug is metabolized in the liver; therefore, regular liver function tests are required in cases of liver dysfunction, and treatment should be stopped immediately if symptoms of hepatitis occur. Women of childbearing age should use appropriate contraceptive methods while taking this medication and must stop use if pregnant. Additionally, this drug can interact with several medications, so patients taking other drugs should inform their doctor or pharmacist, especially when taking specific antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, or grapefruit juice. Elderly patients or those with impaired kidney function have a higher risk of muscle-related side effects and require more careful management. In the event of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so treatment should be symptomatic, monitoring liver function and muscle enzymes accordingly. Finally, this medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored in its original container to maintain its quality and safety.
