This drug is effective against various bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and is used to treat several diseases such as complicated skin and soft tissue infections, community-acquired pneumonia, acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, acute sinusitis, chronic bacterial prostatitis, and urinary tract infections. However, due to the nature of fluoroquinolone drugs, there is a risk of significant adverse reactions; therefore, it should only be used when there are no other treatment options available for acute bacterial sinusitis, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, uncomplicated urinary tract infections, and complicated skin and soft tissue infections. Thus, this drug helps to treat various diseases caused by bacterial infections.

How to take

Adult dose

Typically, adults take levofloxacin orally once daily at a dose of 250 to 750 mg. For patients with normal kidney function (creatinine clearance over 80 mL/min) - Complicated skin and soft tissue infections: 750 mg every 24 hours, for 10 to 14 days - Community-acquired pneumonia: 500 mg every 24 hours, for 7 days - Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis: for 7 days - Acute sinusitis: for 10 to 14 days - Chronic bacterial prostatitis: for 28 days.

Precautions

This drug is used to treat various bacterial infections as a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. However, it may cause tendon-related issues such as tendonitis or tendon rupture, and may present symptoms of peripheral neuropathy and central nervous system disturbances. If such severe side effects are suspected, the use of this drug should be immediately discontinued, and re-administration should be avoided. In patients with myasthenia gravis, this drug poses a risk of exacerbating symptoms, and its use is prohibited. Furthermore, this drug should only be used restrictively for certain infections such as acute bacterial sinusitis, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, uncomplicated urinary tract infections, and acute otitis media. In elderly patients and those with reduced kidney function, and when used in conjunction with corticosteroids, there is an increased risk of tendon rupture, so caution is necessary. If pain or inflammation occurs during activities, the medication should be stopped immediately, and rest should be taken. This drug can induce seizures, so caution should be exercised in patients with epilepsy or a history of seizures. Additionally, it should not be used in individuals with certain genetic conditions, pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and adolescents under the age of 18. Various side effects may occur, such as severe allergic reactions, skin rashes, liver dysfunction, blood disorders, gastrointestinal disturbances; if symptoms arise, consult a physician immediately. Additionally, photosensitivity reactions may occur, so strong sunlight exposure should be avoided. While taking this medication, potential drug interactions may occur; therefore, if currently taking other medications, this should be communicated. Caution is needed when used together with certain antacids or hypoglycemic agents. In cases of overdose, central nervous system symptoms and heart issues may occur, necessitating immediate treatment and ECG monitoring. This drug is not removed by dialysis, thus special management is required in the event of an overdose. In elderly patients with decreased kidney function, blood concentrations may rise, hence dosage adjustment and caution are necessary, and if liver dysfunction symptoms appear, administration should be immediately stopped. Furthermore, patients with aneurysms or heart valve diseases should consult a physician before use.
