Improvement of type 2 diabetes (blood sugar control)
This medication is used for the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes whose blood sugar is not adequately controlled by diet and exercise. It is particularly effective in overweight adult patients and may be used alone or in combination with other oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin. It may also be used in children over 10 years of age and adolescents in growth either as monotherapy or in combination with insulin. This medication effectively controls blood sugar and assists in diabetes management.
Take 500 mg 2-3 times a day with meals. Dosage increases should be gradual, increasing by 500 mg weekly, and the total dose can be split into two doses in the morning and evening up to 2000 mg. If prescribed over 2000 mg, divide the doses into three times a day with meals, up to a maximum of 2550 mg per day.
For children over 10 years of age or adolescents, administer 500 mg once daily during or after meals. After one week, measure blood sugar levels to adjust the dose, with a maximum daily dose of 2000 mg.
This medication can cause severe lactic acidosis or hypoglycemia, so caution is advised. It should not be administered to patients with moderate or severe renal impairment, acute heart failure, serious infections, or dehydration. The administration of this medication should be discontinued before and after examinations using radiological iodine contrast agents, and it should be resumed only after confirming kidney function. It is not to be used in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to this medication, type 1 diabetes, or diabetic ketoacidosis. After severe infections or major trauma, and before and after surgery, this medication may need to be temporarily discontinued and can be resumed when the patient's condition stabilizes. Caution is also required for patients with liver dysfunction, severe lung disease, or excessive alcohol consumption. This medication can cause a rare but serious side effect called lactic acidosis, so if symptoms such as fatigue, myalgia, shortness of breath, or abdominal pain occur, a doctor should be consulted immediately. Gastrointestinal side effects may commonly occur but are usually transient and can be minimized by administering the medication with meals. Blood sugar control levels should be regularly checked, and kidney function and hematological tests should be performed periodically. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of side effects of this medication, so patients should avoid excessive drinking. Elderly patients or those with reduced kidney function require careful dosage adjustment and regular monitoring. There may be interactions with other medications, so patients should inform their physician or pharmacist of any other medications they are taking. During pregnancy, it may affect the fetus, so it should be used according to a doctor's instructions if necessary. While nursing, there is a concern that this medication may pass into breast milk and affect the newborn, so careful consideration should be given to breastfeeding and medication use. Special caution is advised for children and adolescents, and it should be administered in accordance with the indications for use. In cases of overdose, blood dialysis can be used to remove the drug, so if overdose is suspected, immediate medical attention should be sought. This medication does not cause weight gain, making it advantageous for diabetic patients who need weight management. Regular blood sugar testing and body condition checks, as well as consistent consultation with healthcare professionals, are important for the safe use of this medication.
