Treatment for hypercholesterolemia (primary, familial) and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is used as an adjunct to diet in patients with hypercholesterolemia and hyperlipidemia when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient for control. It specifically lowers total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels, delaying the progression of atherosclerosis, particularly in cases of primary hypercholesterolemia, combined hyperlipidemia, and familial hypercholesterolemia. It is also used in children aged 10 to 17 years with elevated LDL cholesterol despite dietary measures, and serves as a dietary adjunct in patients with dysbetalipoproteinemia. Additionally, for adult patients with high sensitive C-reactive protein levels and one or more cardiovascular risk factors, it helps reduce the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and coronary artery revascularization. This medication is used to improve cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
For primary hypercholesterolemia and other relevant diseases, administer once daily at any time during the day, regardless of meals. The initial dose is 5 milligrams once daily, with a maintenance dose of 10 milligrams once daily. Adjust according to LDL cholesterol levels and patient response at intervals of 4 weeks or more, with a maximum dosage of 20 milligrams per day.
For pediatric patients with dysheterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10 to 17 years), the recommended dose is 5 to 20 milligrams once daily, adjusted according to the recommended therapeutic target. Dosage should be adjusted at intervals of 4 weeks or more.
This medication should not be administered to certain patients. First, individuals with an allergy to any of the components in this medication should not use it. It should not be taken by those with severely impaired liver function or those with unexplained elevated liver enzyme levels. People with muscle disorders or previous muscle problems, as well as those taking the immunosuppressant cyclosporine, should also avoid this medication. Patients with significantly impaired kidney function, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and women of childbearing age who do not use appropriate contraception should not use this medication. In particular, high doses should be avoided in cases where there is a high risk of muscle disease, which includes moderate renal impairment, hypothyroidism, personal or family history of muscle disorders, alcohol dependence, and use of certain medications. This medication contains lactose, so individuals with lactose intolerance or related genetic diseases should not use it. This medication should be used cautiously in those who excessively consume alcohol or have a history of liver disease, and it is advisable to have regular liver function tests before and during treatment. For patients with hypercholesterolemia due to hypothyroidism or nephrotic syndrome, it is safer to treat these underlying conditions before using this medication. If symptoms such as muscle pain or weakness occur, patients should inform their healthcare provider immediately, and muscle enzyme levels should be checked and drug discontinuation considered based on symptoms. In particular, elderly patients, patients with renal impairment, and those with a history of alcohol abuse require careful monitoring during treatment. The use of this medication should be discontinued in cases of severe acute illness or the occurrence of muscle weakness. This medication may affect liver function, so it should be stopped immediately if symptoms of liver damage occur, and patients should be cautious about blood sugar control as there may be a slight increase in diabetes risk. Responses to the drug and the risk of side effects may vary depending on genetic factors, so dosage adjustments may be needed. Rarely, serious skin reactions can occur, so if skin rashes or allergic symptoms appear, medication should be discontinued immediately, and healthcare professionals should be consulted. Drug interactions may occur when combined with other medications, especially with cyclosporine, fibrate drugs, certain antiviral agents, antifungals, and some antibiotics, so caution is required when taking these with this medication. Taking antacids may reduce the absorption of this medication, so it is advisable to space out their administration. Additionally, when used with anticoagulants, blood tests for monitoring coagulation are necessary. This medication should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and women of childbearing age should use appropriate contraceptive methods. There are no specific detoxifying agents in cases of overdose, so treatment should be symptomatic and liver function and muscle enzyme levels should be monitored periodically. This medication can rarely cause dizziness, so caution is advised when driving or operating machinery. Before taking this medication, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional to inform them of your health status and any other medications being taken, and to undergo regular tests for safe use.
