This medication helps prevent the occurrence of asthma and supports continuous treatment of asthma. It is also effective in alleviating symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. Therefore, it can be used safely in patients with asthma and allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication should be taken once daily; asthma patients should take it in the evening. Patients with both asthma and allergic rhinitis should take 1 tablet or 1 pack in the evening once daily. This medication should be administered 1 hour before a meal or 2 hours after a meal.

Child dose

Children aged 2 to 5 years: Chew 4 mg once daily as montelukast.

Precautions

This medication is used for the treatment of asthma and allergic rhinitis. This medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, and patients with the genetic disorder phenylketonuria should avoid taking it. Care should be taken not to exceed the daily maximum intake of aspartame, which is up to 2.4 grams for adults. People allergic to this medication or its components should not take it. While taking this medication, various side effects such as fatigue, headache, indigestion, cough, and rash may occur, and any abnormal symptoms should be discussed with a doctor. Although safety has been confirmed in children and adolescents, caution is required due to the possibility of side effects. This medication is not to be used for acute asthma attacks; if acute symptoms arise, immediate rescue therapy should be used. During treatment with this medication, the dosage of inhaled steroids should not be suddenly reduced or discontinued. For preventing bronchospasm due to exercise, do not use this medication alone; it is advisable to use it with inhaled bronchodilators. Patients with hypersensitivity to aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should avoid using these medications while taking this medication. Patients on this medication may occasionally experience eosinophilia and vasculitis symptoms; if these symptoms develop, notify a doctor immediately. No special interactions have been reported with other medications, but concurrent use with certain enzyme inducers requires medical supervision. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should consult with a doctor if the administration of this medication is necessary; no significant issues were found in animal testing, but safety has not been established in humans. Children and the elderly can use this medication, but appropriate dosing and caution are needed according to age. There is no specific antidote for overdose, and general symptomatic treatment and clinical observation are required. This medication is sensitive to light and should be opened just before use; it should be stored out of reach of children. During treatment, if asthma symptoms worsen or new symptoms occur, consult a doctor without delay, and it is important to take this medication consistently.
