Reduction of risks of myocardial infarction and stroke, and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. In particular, it is effective in lowering the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular surgeries, and angina pectoris. It is also used in patients with type 2 diabetes or high-risk adults to prevent cardiovascular complications. When treating hyperlipidemia, it lowers cholesterol and triglyceride levels in patients with hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia, while raising HDL cholesterol levels. It is effective for children and adolescents with familial hypercholesterolemia. This drug is used to improve and treat various risk factors associated with cardiovascular diseases.
Atorvastatin is administered once daily at a dose ranging from 10 mg to 80 mg at any time of day, regardless of food. For hyperlipidemia, the recommended starting dose is 10 mg once daily, but if greater reduction of LDL cholesterol is required, it may be initiated at 20 mg or 40 mg. Lipid levels should be analyzed 2 to 4 weeks after starting treatment and adjusting the dosage. Efficacy and safety in elderly patients over 70 years are similar to those in the general adult population.
For pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10–17), the recommended initial dose is 10 mg once daily, with the maximum recommended dose being 20 mg once daily. The dosage may be adjusted at intervals of 4 weeks or more.
This medication may cause muscle-related symptoms, so immediate consultation with a doctor is necessary if muscle pain or weakness worsens. If there is a significant increase in blood test values related to muscle damage, the use of this medication should be discontinued. It may affect liver function, so caution is needed if there is liver disease or abnormal liver function test results. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take this medication and should practice appropriate contraception while on it. Breastfeeding women should also avoid taking this medication. Children, especially those under 10 years of age, should not use this medication. The elderly or patients with reduced kidney function are at higher risk of myopathy, so caution is required. This medication can interact with certain antibiotics, antifungals, and antivirals, increasing the risk of side effects, so it is essential to inform the doctor or pharmacist. Additionally, consuming grapefruit juice may increase the blood concentration of this medication, so it is recommended to avoid it. If symptoms such as muscle pain, fatigue, or fever appear, it is crucial to inform healthcare professionals immediately and undergo testing. Regular liver function and blood tests are important while taking this medication to check for abnormalities. This medication can cause allergic reactions or skin rashes, and in severe cases, serious skin conditions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome, so if skin abnormalities occur, it should be discontinued immediately. There are no specific antidotes for overdose, so treatment should be based on symptoms and follow the doctor's guidelines.
