Efficacy & effects

Improvement in blood sugar control for type 2 diabetes

  • Blood sugar control issues in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used in conjunction with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone, and if blood sugar control is difficult with oral hypoglycemic agents, it can be combined with insulin. Additionally, when sulfonylureas or metformin monotherapy is insufficient, this drug can be used alongside metformin to aid in blood sugar management. This medication effectively supports diabetes management by enhancing blood sugar control.

How to take

Adult dose

The dose is adjusted individually based on the patient. Swallow without chewing with more than 1/2 cup of water. Administer orally once a day before breakfast or just prior to the first meal. In monotherapy, start with glimepiride 1 mg once daily and titrate by 1 mg every 1 to 2 weeks. Generally, doses above 4 mg offer little additional effect; however, if needed, doses may be increased to a maximum of 6-8 mg.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes or severe liver or kidney dysfunction. It is also safe not to administer to patients who have had an allergic reaction to this drug or its ingredients, or to pregnant or breastfeeding women. Insulin therapy is recommended for patients with severe infections or before and after surgeries and in case of severe injuries. Caution is needed when gastrointestinal disturbances are present due to the risk of hypoglycemia. This medication contains lactose, thus it should not be given to patients with lactose intolerance or certain genetic metabolic disorders. During the initial dosing period, the risk of hypoglycemia is higher, so careful monitoring of blood sugar levels is especially necessary for elderly patients, those with poor nutritional status, irregular meal patterns, or alcohol consumers, as risks of hypoglycemia may be greater. As this medication lowers blood sugar, it is important to be well aware of hypoglycemic symptoms, and if symptoms occur, it is crucial to consume sugar immediately. Symptoms of hypoglycemia may include headache, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, confusion, drowsiness, and in severe cases, loss of consciousness or seizures. During the use of this medication, liver dysfunction, blood abnormalities, and allergic reactions may occur, so any adverse symptoms should be reported to a physician immediately. In particular, if serious allergic reactions such as hives, difficulty breathing, or hypotension occur, the medication should be discontinued immediately and medical treatment sought. This medication may interact with various other drugs, so if other medications are being taken, it is essential to inform the healthcare provider. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised not to use this medication and should switch to insulin therapy if necessary. Safety and efficacy have not been established in individuals under 18 years of age, thus it is recommended not to use in this population. For elderly patients, it is crucial to adjust the dosage as renal function may be impaired. In cases of overdose, severe hypoglycemia can occur, so prompt medical attention is necessary.
