Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

View approved original text

This medication is used to assist in blood sugar control for patients with type 2 diabetes, along with dietary and exercise therapy. It may be administered alone, or in cases where blood sugar is not adequately controlled, it can be combined with other oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin. For instance, when regulation is difficult with sulfonylureas or metformin alone, combining metformin with this medication can enhance treatment efficacy. Ultimately, this medication is effectively used to improve blood sugar control.

How to take

Adult dose

Adjust individually for each patient. Swallow without chewing with more than 1/2 cup of water. This medication is administered orally once daily, before or just prior to the first meal in the morning. Patients who have not received treatment previously should start at a dosage of 1 mg per day of glymepride, increasing the dose by 1 mg every 1-2 weeks. Generally, doses of 4 mg or more tend to not provide significant additional effects.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or those in a coma. Additionally, patients who have had allergic reactions to this medication, sulfonylureas, or sulfonamides should avoid taking it. There is no experience using this medication in patients with severe liver or kidney impairment; in such cases, switching to insulin therapy is recommended. It is best to avoid this medication in women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as those who are breastfeeding. Patients with severe infections, post-surgery, or those with significant trauma are advised to use insulin therapy, and patients with gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea or vomiting should also exercise caution due to the risk of hypoglycemia. This medication contains lactose, so it should be avoided in patients with lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders. During the first week of use, the risk of hypoglycemia is high, so blood sugar should be checked frequently, and symptoms should be closely monitored. Particularly in the elderly, patients with poor nutritional status or irregular eating patterns, those who consume alcohol heavily, patients with weakened liver or kidney function, or those with endocrine disorders, careful observation is even more critical. Symptoms of hypoglycemia may include headache, severe hunger, fatigue, dizziness, confusion, decreased consciousness, etc., and if these symptoms occur, immediate intake of sugar is required. This medication lowers blood sugar levels, so interactions with other drugs may affect blood sugar control. Particularly caution is needed when taken in conjunction with beta-blockers, clonidine, alcohol, antibiotics, and steroid medications. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are advised to switch to insulin therapy to avoid effects on the fetus or neonate. In children under 18 years old, safety and efficacy have not been established, so use of this medication is not recommended. Elderly patients often have reduced kidney function, so caution in dose adjustment is necessary. In cases of overdose, hypoglycemia may worsen, so immediate medical attention should be sought for appropriate treatment. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored in its original container to maintain its quality.
