Treatment of various bacterial infections (e.g., urinary tract, respiratory, and skin infections); combination therapy for Hansen's disease
This medication is effective against various types of bacterial infections. It is primarily used for treating complicated skin and soft tissue infections, acute and chronic otitis media, and acute and chronic sinusitis. It is also effective for community-acquired pneumonia, acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, urinary tract infections, and bacterial gastroenteritis. It is also included in the treatment of infections of the uterus and surrounding tissues in women, various ophthalmic infections, and leprosy. However, due to the nature of fluoroquinolone drugs, significant adverse reactions may occur, so its use is recommended for patients with no other treatment options. Overall, this drug is useful in treating various bacterial infections.
Adults usually take 300~600 mg of ofloxacin in 2~3 divided doses daily. For Hansen's disease, take 400~600 mg of this drug in 2~3 divided doses daily. In principle, it should be used in combination with other antileprosy drugs. The dose may be adjusted as appropriate according to age and symptoms.
This medication can cause tendon-related conditions such as tendonitis and tendon rupture, so it should be discontinued immediately if these symptoms appear. Additionally, it can cause peripheral neuropathy and central nervous system adverse reactions, and medical consultation is necessary if neurological symptoms arise. It should be avoided in patients with myasthenia gravis as it may worsen symptoms. The use of this drug is limited to situations where alternative treatments are unavailable for specific infections. Combining with corticosteroids increases the risk of tendon damage, so co-administration should be avoided. Patients at high risk may experience neurological side effects such as dizziness or seizures, necessitating caution. Allergic reactions or anaphylaxis may occur; if symptoms arise, treatment should be stopped immediately, and medical assistance should be sought. Regular testing and monitoring are required during long-term use due to possible effects on liver and kidney function. This drug may cause photosensitivity reactions, so exposure to strong sunlight or ultraviolet light should be avoided. It may affect blood sugar control, so diabetic patients should monitor blood sugar changes carefully. Pregnant women, women who may become pregnant, nursing mothers, and growing children and adolescents should not use this medication. Elderly patients may experience increased drug concentration due to decreased kidney function, requiring dose adjustments and careful monitoring. It may interact with other medications, so inform healthcare professionals of any current medications. In case of overdose, consult healthcare professionals immediately and seek appropriate measures, ensuring adequate hydration is important. This drug should be kept out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers.
