This medication is used to effectively control blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. It also helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and mortality from cardiovascular disease in patients aged 55 and older who are at high risk for major cardiovascular events. It can be administered even when ACE inhibitors cannot be used. This helps lower the risk of cardiovascular disease and manage safely. This medication improves both hypertension treatment and cardiovascular disease prevention simultaneously.

How to take

Adult dose

For essential hypertension, telmisartan should be taken orally once daily at a dose of 40 mg with water, regardless of meals. Depending on the patient, 20 mg once daily may also be effective and can be increased to 80 mg once daily if required. The maximum antihypertensive effect usually occurs 4-8 weeks after starting treatment. To reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, it is recommended to take 80 mg once daily with water.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn if taken during pregnancy, so it must be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. It should not be used by individuals allergic to this medication or its components, pregnant or breastfeeding women, patients with severe liver disease, individuals with hereditary angioedema, and patients with certain kidney diseases. Elderly patients, patients with hyperkalemia, liver disease, heart disease, gastrointestinal disease, and renal artery hypertension should take this medication with caution, especially those with severely impaired kidney function. Various adverse reactions may occur during this medication, and blood pressure may become too low or potassium levels may rise, necessitating regular monitoring. If symptoms such as angioedema, liver dysfunction, kidney dysfunction, shock, or fainting occur, medical attention must be sought immediately. Interactions with other antihypertensive medications or certain drugs may occur, so it is essential to inform your doctor or pharmacist of any medications being taken. Patients with impaired kidney function should regularly check potassium and creatinine levels, and if blood volume is reduced, they should be cautious as hypotension may occur. It is advisable not to take this medication for 24 hours before surgery, and patients with gastrointestinal diseases should be cautious due to the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. Caution is needed when driving or operating hazardous machinery as dizziness or fainting may occur. This medication contains sorbitol, hence patients with fructose intolerance should avoid it. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not use this medication, and breastfeeding women should avoid use or discontinue breastfeeding. Safety and efficacy have not been established in children under 18 years, so it is not recommended. In case of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, dizziness, and acute kidney failure may occur, requiring immediate medical attention. This medication should be stored out of the reach of children and not transferred to other containers for safety.
