Treatment of respiratory (bronchitis, pneumonia) and urogenital (cystitis, gonorrhea) infections
This medication is used to treat various bacterial infections. It is effective against respiratory infections such as acute and chronic bronchitis, lobar and bronchopneumonia, empyema, and lung abscesses. It also helps in treating upper respiratory infections like tonsillitis, sinusitis, and otitis media. It is used for treating urogenital infections including cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis, pelvic infections, and gonorrhea. Furthermore, it is effective for skin and soft tissue infections, boils, abscesses, wound infections, and bone infections such as osteomyelitis. Lastly, it is also utilized for dental infections, making it beneficial for improving various bacterial infections.
Adults and children over 12 years or weighing 40 kg or more: 250 mg/125 mg as amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium, taken orally three times a day every 8 hours. In cases of severe and respiratory infections, the dosage may be increased to 500 mg/125 mg at a time. In cases of renal impairment, dosage should be adjusted according to creatinine clearance. - Creatinine clearance 10 ~ 30 mL/min: 250 ~ 500 mg of amoxicillin every 12 hours. - Creatinine clearance ≤ 10 mL/min: 250 mg of amoxicillin every 24 hours, not exceeding the maximum dosage. - For children: dosage should be adjusted similarly.
Children over 12 years or weighing 40 kg or more are prescribed the same as adults: 250 mg/125 mg orally three times a day every 8 hours. Children with renal impairment also follow the same dosage as adults.
This medication contains components belonging to the beta-lactam class of antibiotics, specifically within the penicillin family. Patients who have had hypersensitivity reactions to the ingredients of this medication or to beta-lactam drugs should not take this medication as it may cause serious allergic reactions. Particularly, patients with comorbid viral infections such as infectious mononucleosis or lymphocytic leukemia are at increased risk for rash and should be cautious. Furthermore, patients who have suffered from jaundice or liver dysfunction due to this medication or penicillin family drugs in the past should not take it due to the risk of recurrence. Patients with impaired liver function should be cautious when taking this medication as it may worsen their liver condition. Patients with moderate to severe renal impairment may experience increased blood concentrations of this medication, thus they need to adjust the dosing intervals. Patients with allergic tendencies, difficulty in oral intake, elderly patients, or those in poor overall health should be careful as they may exhibit signs of vitamin K deficiency. In cases of gastrointestinal diseases presenting with vomiting or diarrhea, there is a possibility of improper absorption of the medication, thus requiring caution in administration. While taking this medication, gastrointestinal adverse reactions such as diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain are common. Taking the medication with food may alleviate gastrointestinal symptoms. Additionally, serious side effects such as liver dysfunction, skin rashes, severe allergic reactions, blood anomalies, and renal impairment can occur, so any symptoms should prompt immediate consultation with a doctor. During antibiotic treatment, serious intestinal conditions such as pseudomembranous colitis can arise, hence if severe diarrhea or abdominal pain occurs, the medication should be stopped immediately and healthcare should be consulted. Long-term use may lead to the development of resistant bacteria, thus it is important to only take it for the necessary duration. This medication may interact with other drugs, so if you are currently taking other medications, it is essential to inform your doctor or pharmacist. Special caution is necessary when combined with anticoagulants, probenecid, allopurinol, and disulfiram. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before taking this medication, and it is advisable to avoid it during the first three months of pregnancy. Breastfeeding may cause diarrhea or hypersensitivity reactions in infants, so if adverse symptoms arise, discontinue use. Children under 12 years or weighing less than 40 kg have limited experience with this medication and it is not recommended for them. Elderly patients may have impaired kidney and liver function, thus drug dosage and administration intervals should be adjusted while carefully monitoring for adverse reactions. It is important to regularly conduct tests on liver function, kidney function, and blood counts while taking this medication to monitor for any abnormalities. In case of overdose, symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, rash, and convulsions may occur, and immediate cessation and medical attention are required. This medication should be stored in a dry and cool place below 25 degrees Celsius, and the dosage period should not be arbitrarily extended or discontinued.
