This drug is effective against a variety of bacteria and is used for complicated skin and soft tissue infections, secondary infections in chronic respiratory diseases, urinary tract infections such as acute pyelonephritis and cystitis, as well as gonococcal and non-gonococcal urethritis. It is also applicable to bacterial dysentery, gastroenteritis, and inflammatory conditions related to the female reproductive system, periorbital infections, otitis media, sinusitis, and periodontal disease. This drug is particularly recommended for use in critical situations where other treatment options are difficult, even if it poses a risk of serious side effects. Therefore, this drug is effectively used for treating various types of bacterial infections.
For typical adults, 100 mg of levofloxacin is taken orally 2 to 3 times a day. For severe cases or patients who do not respond adequately, 200 mg can be taken 3 times a day. Dosages may be adjusted depending on age and symptoms.
This drug is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used for the treatment of certain bacterial infections. While taking this drug, caution is necessary as there may be serious side effects such as tendon-related problems like tendonitis or tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, central nervous system abnormalities, and exacerbation of myasthenia gravis. If any of these serious adverse symptoms occur, you should immediately discontinue the drug and consult a physician. Particularly, patients with myasthenia gravis should avoid using this drug as their symptoms may worsen. This drug is recommended for use only when there are no other treatment options for specific infections such as acute bacterial sinusitis, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, simple urinary tract infections, or acute otitis media. The risk of tendon rupture is increased when this drug is combined with corticosteroids; therefore, co-administration should be avoided, and immediate rest and avoidance of exercise are recommended if symptoms of tendon rupture occur. Furthermore, this drug has neuromuscular blocking effects, which can lead to serious side effects in patients with myasthenia gravis; hence, caution is required. This drug should not be administered to patients who have hypersensitivity to it, or who have a history of tendonitis or tendon rupture, individuals under 18 years of age, pregnant or potentially pregnant women, nursing mothers, and patients with epilepsy. Patients with severe renal impairment, central nervous system disorders, a history of seizures, elderly patients, diabetic patients, those with specific blood disorders, and those with aortic aneurysm or heart valve disease should be administered this drug cautiously and should consult a physician if necessary. Side effects may include allergic reactions, psychiatric symptoms (insomnia, dizziness, headaches, anxiety, depression, etc.), heart rhythm abnormalities, kidney and liver function anomalies, blood disorders, gastrointestinal issues, musculoskeletal pain and tendonitis, skin rashes, respiratory issues, etc. This drug can cause photosensitivity reactions, so it is important to avoid strong sunlight or artificial UV exposure, and if symptoms occur, discontinue use immediately. Caution is advised when driving or operating machinery as dizziness or drowsiness may occur. This drug may reduce absorption when taken with certain antacids, iron supplements, calcium supplements, etc.; therefore, it is recommended to space doses by 2 hours before and after administration. Additionally, when taken with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, theophylline, warfarin, etc., the risk of side effects may increase, so it is advised to consult a physician or pharmacist. Pregnant or nursing mothers should not take this drug, and it should not be administered to growing children or adolescents. Elderly individuals may experience increased drug concentration due to decreased renal function, so dose adjustment is necessary, and if liver function abnormalities occur, drug use should be discontinued immediately. In the case of overdose, central nervous system symptoms and cardiac rhythm abnormalities may manifest, and immediate medical attention should be sought for appropriate treatment. It is essential to consult medical personnel immediately if any adverse symptoms occur during the administration of this drug.
