This medication is used to treat chronic constipation in adult patients who have failed to relieve symptoms with laxative use. In other words, it helps improve bowel activity in chronic constipation patients who did not benefit from existing laxatives.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is taken orally and can be administered at any time during the day regardless of meals. Adults take 2 mg once daily. Patients aged 65 years and older start with a dose of 1 mg once daily and may increase to 2 mg once daily if necessary. For patients with severe renal impairment (GFR < 30 ml/min/1.73 m2) and severe hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh class C), 1

Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, it should not be administered to patients allergic to any of its components or excipients, patients with severely impaired renal function, or patients with serious gastrointestinal issues. Patients with genetic issues that prevent the breakdown of lactose should also avoid taking this medication. For patients with severe renal impairment, it should be used cautiously with dose reduction. Caution is required when using this medication in patients with other serious diseases such as heart, liver, lung, or nervous system disorders. Particularly, patients with a history of arrhythmias or ischemic heart disease should exercise additional caution. Common side effects include headache, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, which usually occur during the initial treatment period and improve over time. There may be irregular or rapid heartbeats, so if these symptoms occur, consultation with a physician is necessary. Additionally, if severe diarrhea occurs, the effectiveness of oral contraceptives may be decreased, so it is recommended to use additional contraceptive measures. The risk of interactions with other drugs is low; however, caution is required when used with certain drugs. For example, particular care should be taken when co-administering with medications that prolong the QTc interval. Use of this medication during pregnancy is not recommended, and women of childbearing potential should employ effective contraception during treatment. Its use is also not recommended for breastfeeding mothers. This medication is not recommended for children or adolescents under 18 years of age. In the case of overdose, symptoms such as headache, nausea, and diarrhea may occur, and appropriate treatment according to symptoms is necessary. When driving or operating machinery, caution should be taken on the first day of taking this medication, as dizziness or fatigue may occur.
