Treatment of chronic hyperuricemia in patients with gout
This medication is used in the treatment of chronic hyperuricemia in gout patients. Hyperuricemia can lead to gout attacks and joint damage due to increased blood uric acid levels; this medication lowers blood uric acid levels, alleviating gout symptoms and preventing recurrences. With regular use, it effectively controls uric acid levels, aiding in gout management.
1. Adults Administer 40 mg or 80 mg of this medicine once daily, regardless of meals. This medicine acts very rapidly; therefore, recheck the serum uric acid concentration after 2 weeks. The treatment goal is to lower and maintain the serum uric acid concentration below 6 mg/dL(357 μmol/L). 2. Patients with renal impairment No dose adjustment is needed in patients with mild or moderate renal impairment. The safety and efficacy of this medicine have not been adequately evaluated in patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance less than 30 mL/min). 3. Patients with hepatic impairment No special dose adjustment is needed in patients with mild or moderate hepatic impairment. Only limited information is available for patients with moderate hepatic impairment, and the efficacy and safety of this medicine have not been studied in patients with severe hepatic impairment (Child Pugh class C).
This medication may increase the risk of cardiovascular death when administered to gout patients with cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is advisable for patients with a history of cardiovascular disease to consider alternative therapies. It should not be given to patients with allergies to this drug's active ingredient or excipients, patients taking mercaptopurine or azathioprine, and certain genetically lactose-intolerant patients. Patients with liver disease, thyroid dysfunction, heart disease, those taking specific medications, and organ transplant recipients should use this medication cautiously. Regular liver function tests during use are recommended. Possible side effects include liver dysfunction, diarrhea, headache, rash, fatigue, and dizziness; if symptoms are severe, consult a healthcare professional. Do not initiate this medication during an acute gout attack; wait until the gout attack subsides. In the initial treatment phase, gout attacks may temporarily increase, so consider taking anti-inflammatory medications or colchicine as a preventative measure. This medication may affect liver function, so liver function tests should be conducted before and after administration, and if symptoms of liver dysfunction occur, administration should be stopped immediately. This medication can cause drowsiness, dizziness, and sensory deficits, so caution is needed when driving or operating machinery. Serious allergic reactions can rarely occur; if symptoms like rash, difficulty breathing, or facial swelling appear, discontinue use immediately and seek medical attention. It is advisable for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding to avoid this medication, and it is not recommended for use in children under 18 years old as there is no experience with its use in this population. Caution is advised because this drug can be hazardous when taken in conjunction with certain medications (mercaptopurine, azathioprine, etc.), thus all current medications should be disclosed to healthcare professionals, as there may be potential interactions with other drugs. There is no specific antidote for overdose, and treatment will be symptomatic. Store this medication out of reach of children, and no specific storage conditions are required.
