This medication is primarily used in patients with essential hypertension and effectively controls blood pressure. It is also developed for high-risk cardiovascular disease patients over 55 years old who cannot take ACE inhibitors. It helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death due to cardiovascular disease in these patients. It is used to manage hypertension and lower the possibility of severe complications from cardiovascular diseases.

How to take

Adult dose

Telmisartan as 40 mg once daily taken orally with water, without regard to meals. Depending on the patient, 20 mg once daily may be effective, and if needed, it can be increased to 80 mg once daily. For the purpose of reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, it is recommended to take 80 mg once daily orally with water. For patients with liver disorders, a dosage of 40 mg once daily should not be exceeded in cases of mild to moderate liver impairment.

Precautions

This drug can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn, especially during pregnancy, so it must be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. Those with allergies to this medication or its components should not use it. Patients with severely impaired liver function or problems with bile secretion should not take this drug. Patients with hereditary angioedema or a history of angioedema should not use this medication. In diabetic patients with severely impaired kidney function, the combination of this drug with certain medications is prohibited. Patients with genetic metabolic issues such as lactose intolerance should not take this drug. Elderly patients, those with hyperkalemia, and patients with weak liver function should be cautious and may need dosage adjustments. Patients with heart valve disease or cerebrovascular disorders should watch for excessively low blood pressure. Patients with kidney-related issues or severely impaired kidney function should be cautious, as taking this drug may worsen kidney function. When used with other antihypertensives, this drug may increase blood pressure-lowering effects, so caution is needed. Serum potassium levels may increase, so patients at risk of hyperkalemia should have regular blood tests. This drug may cause dizziness or fainting during driving or operating machinery, so caution is necessary. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take this drug, as it may pose risks to the fetus, especially during pregnancy. Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients have not been established, and it is advisable not to use in patients under 18 years of age. In the event of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, arrhythmia, dizziness, and kidney dysfunction may occur, requiring immediate medical attention. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and it is recommended to open the packaging just before use. During treatment, liver function, kidney function, electrolyte levels, etc., should be regularly monitored, and any abnormal symptoms should be immediately reported to a healthcare professional.
