Cefuroxime is an antibiotic effective against various bacterial infections, with a broad antimicrobial spectrum against aerobic and anaerobic Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is primarily used in the treatment of upper respiratory tract infections such as otitis media, sinusitis, tonsillitis, and pharyngitis, as well as lower respiratory tract infections like acute and chronic bronchitis and pneumonia. It is also effective against urinary tract infections such as pyelonephritis, cystitis, and urethritis, as well as skin and soft tissue infections such as abscesses, pyoderma, and impetigo. It is utilized in the treatment of gonorrhea and early Lyme disease and is highly stable against beta-lactamase, allowing it to address resistant strains of ampicillin and amoxicillin. Thus, Cefuroxime is used as a reliable agent for treating various bacterial infections.

Precautions

This medication is a cephalosporin antibiotic and should not be used in patients with a known allergy to this drug class. Patients with a history of hypersensitivity reactions to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics, severely impaired renal function, and those who have difficulty taking medications orally or elderly patients should be administered cautiously. Mild adverse reactions are common when taking this medication, and serious skin reactions or blood abnormalities, or liver or kidney dysfunction may occur infrequently. Consult a healthcare professional immediately if abnormal symptoms manifest. To prevent the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, it is important to confirm the susceptibility of the infecting organism and to administer the drug only for the required duration. During administration, allergic reactions or shock symptoms may occur, and if such symptoms arise, discontinue use immediately and seek appropriate treatment. This medication may cause excessive growth of fungi such as Candida, and caution should be exercised when using it for extended periods regarding non-susceptible organisms. If gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea or abdominal pain are severe or persistent, suspect pseudomembranous colitis and discontinue treatment immediately. For pregnant or breastfeeding women, the safety of this medication has not been established, and it should be used cautiously only when necessary, as the drug may be transmitted through breast milk. For children, safety has not been established in infants under 3 months old, and due to the bitter taste of the tablet, using a dry syrup form is preferable. Elderly patients may experience more side effects due to decreased body function; thus, dosage and administration intervals should be adjusted, and their condition should be closely monitored. This medicine may interact with other drugs, so caution should be taken when used with diuretics, aminoglycoside antibiotics, probenecid, antacids, and it can reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives. Dizziness may occur when driving or operating machinery, so caution is advised. In case of overdose, symptoms like seizures may appear due to central nervous system stimulation, and blood dialysis or peritoneal dialysis can help lower drug concentration.
