Relief of peripheral and central neuropathic pain, adjunctive treatment for focal seizures, improvement of fibromyalgia
This medication is used in adults to treat peripheral and central neuropathic pain and as an adjunct for focal seizures in epilepsy. It is also effective in alleviating symptoms of fibromyalgia. In summary, this drug is used for the relief of peripheral and central neuropathic pain, adjunctive treatment of focal seizures in epilepsy, and improvement of fibromyalgia symptoms.
This medication is administered orally divided into two doses per day, regardless of meals. 1. Neuropathic Pain - Peripheral Neuropathic Pain: Starting dose is 150 mg per day, which can be increased to 300 mg per day after 3 to 7 days; thereafter, it can be further increased to a maximum of 600 mg per day at intervals of 7 days. - Central Neuropathic Pain: Starting dose is 150 mg per day, which can be increased to 300 mg per day after one week.
Safety and efficacy data is insufficient for children under 12 years old and adolescents aged 12 to 17, and administration is not recommended.
This medication is an antiepileptic drug, and during treatment, there may be changes in mood and behavior, such as suicidal thoughts or actions, depression, and abnormal mood changes that should be carefully monitored. Patients with allergies to any ingredients in this medication or certain genetic metabolic disorders such as lactose intolerance should not take it. Diabetic patients may experience changes in blood sugar control due to weight gain, thus adjustments in the dosage of antidiabetic medications may be necessary. If symptoms of angioedema occur, the medication should be discontinued immediately. Elderly patients should take extra care during the initial phase of treatment due to an increased risk of falls from dizziness or drowsiness. Temporary blurriness or changes in vision may occur with this medication; if symptoms persist, consultation with a healthcare professional is recommended. Long-term use or sudden discontinuation may result in withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia, headache, and anxiety; dosing should be done according to medical advice. When taken with other medications that may affect the central nervous system, there is a risk of drug misuse or dependency, requiring careful history taking and monitoring. Patients with impaired kidney function may need dose adjustments, and those with cardiovascular diseases should also take this medication cautiously. Caution is advised when used with opioid analgesics as there is an increased risk of central nervous system depression, and patients with respiratory or neurological diseases may require special care. Pregnant women are recommended to avoid this medication during early pregnancy due to potential effects on the fetus, and women of childbearing age should use effective contraception. Nursing mothers should consult with a healthcare professional regarding whether to continue breastfeeding or discontinue this medication since it may pass into breast milk. Activities requiring mental alertness, such as driving or operating machinery, should be avoided until dizziness and drowsiness from this medication have resolved. In the case of overdose, symptoms of confusion, drowsiness, and depression may occur, necessitating immediate medical attention for appropriate treatment.
