Treatment of respiratory and skin infections, mycobacterial infections, and Helicobacter eradication
This medication is effective against various bacteria, particularly used to treat lower respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia, upper respiratory tract infections such as pharyngitis and sinusitis, and skin and soft tissue infections. It is also effective against infections caused by Mycobacterium avium and Mycobacterium intracellulare and helps eradicate Helicobacter pylori in patients with duodenal ulcers. It broadly acts against various causative pathogens to alleviate symptoms caused by infections.
○ Adults: The usual dose of clarithromycin is 250mg (potency) twice daily. For severe infections, administer 500mg (potency) twice daily. The usual duration of treatment is 7~14 days. In patients with renal impairment whose creatinine clearance is 30mL/min or less, the dose should be reduced by half: 250mg (potency) once daily, or, for severe infections, 250mg (potency) twice daily. Do not administer for more than 14 days in these patients. ○ Mycobacterial infections: Administer 500mg (potency) of this medicine twice daily. In this case, it should be administered in combination with other antimycobacterial agents, such as ethambutol, clofazimine, and rifampin. ○ Eradication of Helicobacter pylori in patients with duodenal ulcers: Administer 500mg (potency) of this medicine 3 times daily in combination with omeprazole 40mg once daily for 14 days, followed by omeprazole 40mg once daily for 14 consecutive days. That is, administer clarithromycin 500mg (potency) 3 times daily for 14 days (days 1~14), and omeprazole 40mg once daily for 28 days (days 1~28).
○ Children 12 years and older: Same as adults ○ Children under 12 years: Use clarithromycin dry syrup.
This medication should not be administered to patients with specific allergic reactions. In particular, patients who have had hypersensitivity reactions to the components of this medication or similar antibiotics, patients with severe heart rhythm disorders or significantly impaired liver and kidney function, and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use it. Furthermore, this medication should be avoided in combination with certain other drugs due to the risk of cardiac arrhythmias or toxic reactions. For example, using it alongside medications that affect the heart or hinder liver metabolism can be dangerous. Caution should be taken when using this medication in patients with impaired liver and kidney function, those with heart disease, elderly patients, and patients on other antibiotics. During treatment, if any unusual symptoms occur such as allergic reactions, severe diarrhea, abdominal pain, breathing difficulties, skin rash, changes in hearing, muscle pain, dizziness, etc., the use of the medication should be stopped immediately and medical consultation should be sought. As this medication is an antibiotic, it should only be taken for the prescribed duration to prevent the development of bacterial resistance, and caution is needed for long-term or repeated use, as resistant bacteria may develop. It is safer for pregnant or breastfeeding women to avoid this medication, and if necessary, consultation with a specialist is a must. This medication may cause side effects in patients with specific genetic metabolic disorders, so prior disclosure of such history is essential before taking the medication. Additionally, this medication has a high potential for drug interactions, so if other medications are being taken, it is crucial to inform healthcare professionals, and regular blood tests and liver and kidney function tests may be required. During the use of this medication, dizziness may occur while driving or operating machinery, so caution is advised. In case of overdose, gastrointestinal disturbances or central nervous system symptoms may appear, and immediate medical attention should be sought.
