Precautions

This medication can cause serious metabolic complications such as lactic acidosis, so patients with poor kidney function or those with heart or liver disease should take special precautions. Patients allergic to any ingredients in this medication, or those with type 1 diabetes, lactic acidosis, diabetic ketoacidosis, or severe renal impairment should not take this medication. Patients in acute conditions such as acute infections, dehydration, severe trauma, shock, or acute myocardial infarction should also avoid using this medication. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised not to take this medication, and those planning to become pregnant should consult a doctor. This medication has a risk of hypoglycemia, so blood sugar changes should be closely monitored when used alongside insulin or sulfonylureas. Elderly patients with impaired kidney function should have regular kidney function tests before taking this medication, and dosage adjustments may be necessary. Rare side effects such as acute pancreatitis or bullous pemphigoid can occur while taking this medication, so any abdominal pain or skin abnormalities should be reported to a physician immediately. The metformin component can cause vitamin B12 deficiency, so blood tests to check vitamin B12 levels are recommended during long-term use. This medication may interact with other drugs, so it is essential to inform the physician or pharmacist about any other medications being taken. Before and after radiological examinations using iodinated contrast agents, this medication should be temporarily discontinued, and resumed after kidney function is stabilized. Patients undergoing surgery should stop this medication 48 hours prior to the procedure and resume it only after kidney function has returned to normal following surgery. This medication is not recommended for children under 10 years of age, and safety and efficacy have not been sufficiently confirmed for adolescents aged 10 to 17 years. The effects on driving or operating machinery are unclear, so caution is advised after taking this medication. In case of an overdose, the risk of lactic acidosis is increased, so if symptoms occur, one should seek immediate medical treatment.
