Chronic constipation refers to difficulty or irregularity in bowel movements, and this medication is used to improve intestinal function and alleviate symptoms. Regular use may improve bowel habits and reduce discomfort. It acts effectively on chronic constipation symptoms to help enhance the quality of life.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is administered orally and can be taken at any time of the day, regardless of meals. Adults take 2 mg once a day. For elderly individuals aged 65 and older, the initial dose is 1 mg once daily, and if necessary, it may be increased to 2 mg once daily. For patients with severe renal impairment (GFR < 30 ml/min/1.73 m2) and those with severe liver impairment (Child-Pugh class C), the dosage is 1 per day.

Precautions

This medication should not be administered to certain patients. Firstly, patients allergic to the active ingredient or additives of this medication should not take it. Secondly, it is not used in patients with severely impaired kidney function requiring dialysis. Thirdly, patients with serious gastrointestinal conditions such as functional or structural abnormalities in the intestinal barrier, intestinal perforation, intestinal obstruction, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, or toxic megacolon should also refrain from taking this medication. Fourthly, this medication contains lactose and should not be administered to patients with genetic lactose intolerance or related disorders. Caution is needed when using this medication in some patients. Patients with significantly reduced kidney function may need to reduce the dosage due to potential increases in drug concentration and should use it carefully. Its safety has not been fully established in patients with severe comorbid conditions involving the heart, liver, lungs, or nervous system, so caution is advised. Patients with a history of arrhythmia or ischemic heart disease should also take this medication with caution. For patients with severely impaired liver function, the dosage should be reduced, and extra caution is required when used with other drugs that may cause QT interval prolongation. This medication may commonly cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as headaches, abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea. These symptoms usually occur in the early stages of treatment and often resolve over time. Various side effects such as dizziness, fatigue, palpitations, vomiting, and dyspepsia have also been reported. If new instances of palpitations occur, it is essential to consult a physician. This medication may decrease the effectiveness of oral contraceptives in case of severe diarrhea, so it is advisable to use additional contraceptive methods. The potential for drug interactions with this medication is low; however, caution should be exercised when used concurrently with specific medications that could alter blood concentrations. Particularly, care should be taken when co-administering with drugs that prolong the QT interval. Moreover, using it with atropine-like substances may reduce the effectiveness of this medication. There are no specific food interactions. The safety of this medication has not been adequately established during pregnancy, thus it is not recommended, and women of childbearing age are advised to use effective contraception during use. It is also not recommended for nursing women to use this medication. It is best not to administer this medication to children and adolescents under 18 years of age. Symptoms such as headaches, nausea, and diarrhea may occur in case of overdose, and appropriate treatment may be required based on the symptoms. Severe fluid loss from an overdose may require electrolyte replacement. This medication may affect the ability to drive or operate machinery, so special caution is needed on the first day of usage. When storing this medication, keep it out of reach of children, and store it in its original container while avoiding moisture.
