Treatment for asthma prevention and alleviation of allergic rhinitis symptoms
This medication helps prevent and treat asthma on an ongoing basis. It is also used to relieve symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. Thus, it is effective in managing respiratory-related allergic diseases.
Adults and adolescents aged 15 years and older should take 10 mg of montelukast orally once daily. The 10 mg oral dissolving film should be placed on the tongue and allowed to dissolve without water, taken once daily. This medication should be taken once daily; asthma patients should take it in the evening. The medication should be administered 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals.
Children aged 6 to 14 years should take 5 mg of montelukast once daily by chewing or by placing it on the tongue and allowing it to dissolve without water. Children aged 4 to 5 years should take 4 mg once daily by chewing.
This medication is used for the treatment of asthma and allergic rhinitis. During the use of this medication, abnormalities in the neuropsychiatric system may occur, so if symptoms such as agitation, aggressive behavior, anxiety, depression, hallucinations, or suicidal thoughts appear, immediate consultation with a doctor is necessary. This medication contains aspartame, an artificial sweetener, so patients with phenylketonuria should avoid use. If the formulation contains lactose, patients with genetic issues such as galactose intolerance or lactase deficiency should not take it. This medication is not for use during an acute asthma attack; a rescue inhaler should be kept and used in the presence of acute symptoms. Do not use alone for the treatment of exercise-induced bronchospasm; other inhalers should be used as needed. Patients with hypersensitivity to aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should not use these medications while taking this drug. During treatment, abnormalities in liver function, skin rashes, gastrointestinal symptoms, respiratory symptoms, and other adverse effects may occur; any unusual symptoms should be reported to a doctor. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should take this medication only when necessary and after consulting a doctor. Children and the elderly can also use it, but dosage and precautions may vary by age, and physician instructions should be followed. In case of overdose, as there are no specific antidotes, one should visit a medical facility immediately to receive appropriate treatment. Keep this medication out of reach of children and do not transfer it to other containers. During treatment, if asthma symptoms worsen or if the use of rescue inhalers becomes more frequent than usual, consult a doctor. Any newly developed or worsened neuropsychiatric symptoms during treatment should be immediately reported to healthcare personnel, and discontinuation may be directed by a doctor.
Hives, angioedema, toxic epidermal necrolysis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, suicidal impulses and behavior (including suicide), severe headache, thunderclap headache, seizures, confusion, vision disturbances, paralysis, vasculitic rash, worsening of pulmonary symptoms, cardiac complications, neuropathy, systemic eosinophilia, very rare cases of hepatic eosinophilic infiltration, very rare cases of pancreatitis, cholestatic hepatitis, hepatocellular damage, and mixed liver injury.
