Treatment of essential hypertension and heart failure (including intolerance to ACE inhibitors), reduction of mortality risk after myocardial infarction
This medication is used to control blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. It also helps improve symptoms and maintain heart function in heart failure patients who are intolerant to ACE inhibitors. It is effective in reducing the risk of death in clinically stable patients with left ventricular dysfunction or reduced contraction function after myocardial infarction. Thus, it is used for hypertension, heart failure, and post-myocardial infarction management.
For essential hypertension, take with water during meals or in between meals. It is recommended to take it at the same time each day (e.g., morning). Adults: It is recommended to take 80 mg orally once daily as valsartan. If blood pressure is not adequately controlled, the dose can be increased up to 160 mg daily or combined with a diuretic, and may be increased up to 320 mg daily. Elderly patients (75 years or older): Start with 40 mg once daily.
The safety and efficacy in children and adolescents under 18 years of age have not been established, therefore its use is not recommended.
This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus if taken during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters. It must be discontinued as soon as pregnancy is confirmed. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, breastfeeding women, patients with severe liver impairment, patients with significantly reduced kidney function, and patients with hereditary angioedema should not use this medication. Caution is advised for elderly patients, patients with hyperkalemia, patients with liver disorders, patients with heart valve diseases, and patients with cardiovascular diseases as they may experience low blood pressure or changes in kidney function. This medication may cause a sudden drop in blood pressure after the first dose, so patients who are particularly low on fluids or sodium, those taking diuretics, or those undergoing dialysis should start with a low dose and be closely monitored. Patients with high serum potassium levels or those at risk of hyperkalemia should regularly check their potassium levels during this medication and be cautious when taking potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics. This medication may interact with other antihypertensives or specific drugs, so any medications being taken must be discussed with healthcare professionals. Dizziness or drowsiness may occur, so caution is needed when driving or operating machinery. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid taking this medication, and if unavoidable, must consult a specialist. Safety and efficacy in children and adolescents have not been established, so its use is not recommended. In case of overdose, symptoms such as low blood pressure and decreased consciousness may occur, requiring immediate emergency care. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers.
