Treatment of schizophrenia
This medication is used to treat symptoms associated with schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a complex disorder that includes psychotic symptoms, and this medication helps stabilize the patient's mental state and alleviate symptoms.
Adults: Administer 4 mg per dose twice daily after meals, increasing the dose gradually. The maintenance dose is 8~16 mg per day, divided into 2 doses taken after meals. As the absorption of this drug is readily affected by food, it must be taken after meals. Carefully monitor each patient and adjust the dose to the minimum required; do not exceed the maximum daily dose of 24 mg.
Caution is required when using this drug in elderly patients with dementia, as it may increase mortality rates. In particular, patients at high risk of cerebrovascular disease should use this medication with care due to the possibility of stroke. There is a risk of venous thromboembolism, so it is essential to carefully check for thrombotic risk factors before and during the use of this medication and to take preventive measures. This medication should not be administered to patients in a comatose state or those taking central nervous system depressants, as well as patients on specific antifungals or HIV treatments. Patients with hypersensitivity to this medication or genetic issues such as lactose intolerance should also avoid its use. Caution is necessary for patients with a history of cardiovascular disease, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, suicidal risk, liver impairment, and those with diabetes risk factors. It should be avoided during pregnancy or breastfeeding as its safety has not been established in these populations. This medication may cause side effects such as tremors, movement disorders, insomnia, drowsiness, and anxiety, and, although rare, may also lead to neuroleptic malignant syndrome, tardive dyskinesia, paralytic ileus, and antidiuretic hormone secretion abnormalities. Blood sugar levels may rise, so diabetic patients should monitor their blood sugar closely. If drowsiness or decreased concentration occurs while taking this medication, activities such as driving or operating hazardous machinery should be avoided, and medical advice should be sought if symptoms worsen. This medication is metabolized by the liver, so drug interactions may occur when taken with specific medications; therefore, it is essential to discuss concurrent medications with a physician or pharmacist. Additionally, this medication should be taken after meals, as its effectiveness may decrease when taken on an empty stomach. Elderly patients may be at higher risk for adverse reactions, so careful monitoring is needed. During pregnancy, it should be administered only based on a physician's judgment due to potential fetal impact, and it is recommended to discontinue use while breastfeeding.
