Precautions

This medicine should not be used by patients who are allergic to this drug or its components, or who have had hypersensitivity reactions to valacyclovir. Patients with renal impairment may experience neurological side effects when using this medication, so caution is necessary. Patients with compromised liver function should use this medication cautiously, as it may worsen liver function. Particular care is needed when administering this medication to infants or children, and it is advisable to use the lowest necessary dose. Elderly individuals often have decreased renal function, which may lead to increased blood concentrations and a greater risk of side effects, requiring caution while using this medication. Severe allergic reactions such as shock, difficulty breathing, and hypotension may rarely occur during the use of this medication; if these symptoms appear, treatment should be discontinued immediately, and medical advice should be sought. Hypersensitivity reactions such as skin rashes, fever, urticaria, and blisters may also occur, and if these symptoms arise, the medication should be stopped. Alopecia, dermatitis, and severe skin diseases have also been reported, hence, skin condition changes should be monitored. Neurological symptoms may include altered consciousness, confusion, hallucinations, seizures, anxiety, drowsiness, and more, particularly in patients with renal impairment or elderly patients. In cases of renal impairment, signs of renal failure, hematuria, and proteinuria may occur, necessitating periodic monitoring of renal status. Blood-related side effects may include leukopenia, anemia, and platelet abnormalities, possibly requiring blood tests. Liver function abnormalities or jaundice symptoms may arise, necessitating regular liver function tests. Gastrointestinal symptoms may include gastritis, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain; if severe, medication should be stopped. Systemic symptoms may include fever, malaise, and headache, warranting consultation with medical personnel if abnormalities appear. Musculoskeletal side effects may include arthralgia and myalgia. Cardiac and circulatory side effects may present as arrhythmias, blood pressure changes, and chest pain, requiring caution. Genitourinary issues such as urinary difficulty or urinary obstruction may rarely occur. Other reported side effects include pneumonia, difficulty breathing, visual disturbances, hair loss, and hyponatremia. This medication is most effective when administered early in the symptomatic phase, and treatment should ideally begin within a certain period after the onset of symptoms. Immunocompromised patients may consider intravenous medication. Sufficient hydration is required during administration to prevent dehydration, which can reduce the risk of renal toxicity. In the treatment of recurrent genital herpes, the need for continued use after long-term administration should be evaluated. While taking this medication, altered consciousness may occur; thus, driving or operating hazardous machinery should be avoided. Interactions may occur when combined with other medications, particularly those affecting renal function; caution is warranted when used with such drugs. Pregnant women or those who could become pregnant should carefully consider the risks and benefits of using this medication. Women who are breastfeeding should discontinue breastfeeding during treatment, as the components of this drug may be excreted in breast milk. For infants and children, administration should only occur as necessary and at the minimal dose possible, as safety has not been fully established. Elderly patients may have increased drug concentrations due to decreased renal function; thus, dosage and intervals should be adjusted along with adequate hydration. In cases of overdose, confusion, seizures, and coma may occur, with potential risks of renal failure; immediate medical attention is required. In the event of overdose, blood drug concentrations should be monitored closely, and treatments such as blood dialysis may need to be considered.
