This medication is used to treat athlete's foot, ringworm, tinea capitis, and onychomycosis caused by dermatophyte fungi in adults. It is also effective in treating tinea capitis in children. In other words, it is used to treat fungal infections of the skin and nails.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

Administer 125 mg of terbinafine per dose, twice a day, or 250 mg per dose, once a day. The treatment duration depends on the condition as follows: 1) Dermatophyte infections: athlete's foot (interdigital, plantar/moccasin type) 2-6 weeks, ringworm 2-4 weeks, tinea capitis 2-4 weeks. 2) Onychomycosis: typically administered for 6 weeks to 3 months. Precautions

This medicine is not recommended for patients with chronic liver disease or active liver disease. Make sure to check if there is a history of liver disease before administration and conduct regular liver function tests. If symptoms of liver dysfunction appear, discontinue the medication immediately and consult a doctor. This medication can cause serious liver damage, such as liver failure, so caution is required. This medication should not be administered to patients with allergies to this medicine or its components, patients with chronic liver disease, hematological disorders, severe renal failure, nursing mothers, infants under 2 years of age, or patients with certain genetic lactose intolerance. Caution should be exercised when administering to patients with impaired renal function, elderly patients, children weighing less than 20 kg, psoriasis, or systemic lupus erythematosus patients, and if serious skin reactions occur, the medication should be discontinued immediately. This medication can cause various side effects such as liver dysfunction, blood disorders, skin rashes, muscle pain, gastrointestinal symptoms, mental changes, and neurological abnormalities; therefore, if any abnormal symptoms appear, notify a doctor immediately. Caution is needed when driving or operating machinery as dizziness and other side effects may occur. This medication may interact with other drugs, requiring dosage adjustments and caution during concomitant use. In particular, when used together with medications metabolized in the liver, follow your doctor's instructions. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should use this medication cautiously, and nursing mothers should discontinue breastfeeding while using it. Experience in administering to infants under 2 years is lacking, hence not recommended. Care should be taken when administering to children and the elderly. In case of overdose, symptoms may include headache, nausea, abdominal pain, and dizziness, requiring immediate medical attention. Store this medicine out of reach of children and keep it in a tightly closed container, avoiding direct sunlight and storing it at room temperature.

Side effects and when to seek care immediately

Serious side effects

  • Hives, severe swelling (edema), chest tightness, difficulty breathing, cold sweats, paleness, severe allergic reactions,
  • High fever with severe rashes, blisters, skin peeling, mucosal pain in the mouth/eyes, severe skin adverse reactions,
  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, mucocutaneous syndrome, acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis, erythema multiforme, toxic skin rashes, exfoliative dermatitis, blistering dermatitis,
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, asthma attacks

Mild side effects

Rash, itching, photosensitivity reactions, musculoskeletal reactions (arthralgia, myalgia), muscle pain, weakness, elevated CPK, elevated myoglobin in blood and urine, hypotension, erythema, facial edema, lymphangiectasia, gastrointestinal symptoms (abdominal bloating, decreased appetite, indigestion, nausea, mild abdominal pain, diarrhea), dyspepsia, vomiting, glossitis, depression, anxiety, headache, taste disorders, dizziness, drowsiness, sensory abnormalities, sensory loss, attention impairment

Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.

Storage

Store this medicine in a tightly closed container to prevent exposure to air, ideally at room temperature between 1 to 30 degrees Celsius. This way, the effectiveness of the medication can be well maintained.
